Sony Handycam HDR-XR160
3 Star Review cnet.com - May 9, 2011

THE GOOD: A wide-angle lens, built-in USB cable, and consistently good automated behavior highlight the otherwise no-frills Sony Handycam HDR-CX130, CX160, and XR160 camcorders. THE BAD: Their sub-HD resolution sensor produces merely satisfactory video. THE BOTTOM LINE: Typical for their price class, the no-frills Sony Handycam HDR-CX130, CX160, and XR160 produce generally subpar HD video, but if youre not picky youll probably be fine. The CX130 is the best buy of the three, as long as you go cheap on the memory card.

3 Star Review productwiki.com - Jul 11, 2011

The HDR-XR160 Handycam is a camcorder released by Sony as part of its HD lineup, promising high-definition home videos thanks in part to an "Exmor R" CMOS sensor, a large-capacity hard drive memory, and extensive zoom capabilities. The "Exmor R" CMOS sensor of the HDR-XR160 Handycam works more sensitively than other sensors, enabling it to capture clear video in poor lighting conditions. The 1920 x 1080 high definition footage is recorded to a massive 160GB hard drive built right into the camcorder, eliminating the need for buying and packing multiple SD cards, and offering the capacity to store up to 66 hours of footage at once. The HDR-XR160 also includes a 30x optical zoom and 42x extended zoom, as well as Wind Noise Reduction, a microphone jack, and a 5.1ch microphone and stereo speaker. Features: Shoots 1920 x 1080 High Definition videos "Exmor R" CMOS sensor records clear videos even in ... PROS: (1) Audio capture is fantastic - integrated microphone is clear and highly responsive when properly engaged (2) Manual Low Light mode performs surprisingly well - clearly captures un-zoomed video with even the faintest light sources (nightlight, bathroom light, etc.) (3) 30x optical zoom performs quickly and quietly - retains maximum clarity in well-lit environments, even when fully extended (4) In-line USB connector removes the need to store and keep track of an external cable - makes charging and computer connectivity much simpler (5) Large, built-in hard drive is much more functional than working with multiple SD cards - can be digitally managed and organized directly from the unit itself ... CONS: (1) Bottom-mounted battery release is not conducive to tripod shooting - compartment is completely inaccessible when used with a stand adapter (2) Standard and HD-quality video tends to appear rather bright when played back on a computer or television - may require a considerable amount of contrast adjustment for optimal viewing (3) Auto-focus performs relatively slow as compared to other models from Toshiba and Panasonic - up to 1.5x slower in some circumstances (4) Auto Gain function can only be applied in playback mode - may be frustrating for users with a very specific application in mind

Great camera, great quality movies!
5 Star Review By MrWerks on Sony - Official Store - Mar 4, 2012

I got tired of using my digital still camera to take videos of my son's wrestling tournaments (from the corner of the mat), so we went with this model after reading the reviews and studying the features. We couldn't be happier! Picture quality is phenomenal, 5.1 sound recording is amazing, and it takes great stills during movie mode which is excellent for sports footage. Like other reviews mention, the zoom is touchy...it doesn't creep forward gently, but tends to rush in and out which is my only complaint. It's best to set the zoom before filming begins to avoid any focus issues. I also didn't anticipate every five minute video I took would be a gig or larger, so transfer times can take a while, but that's what you get with blu-ray quality video with surround sound audio!

Excellent camcorder but,
5 Star Review By hawaiiR8dr on Sony - Official Store - Feb 21, 2012

nice palm size for most users and functions on the touch screen make it very user friendly. I used it for my son's martial arts tournaments and was impressed w/the end product. Of course I'm a rookie at filming action shots and was mildly surprised to see that there was absolutely no blur!!!. The sounds recorded were absolutely HD.

Really Like this Video Recorder
5 Star Review By rwmol on Sony - Official Store - Feb 7, 2012

I purchased the camera to replace an old Sony analog recorder. As mentioned in the title, great camera. The price isn't bad either. The software is adequate for the beginner or intermediate user. Downloadable in SD and HD formats. Software lets you save the raw video or edited video to your computer hard drive via USB cord provided. Great for the more advanced user with advanced editing software. Unfortunately no fire-wire output. There's been some discussion on the ability to remove the battery when mounted to a tripod. No problem with the Sunpak 6060XL. I Highly recommend this camera.

Excellent High Quality Handycam
5 Star Review By BigChiefYambag on Sony - Official Store - Jan 4, 2012

Purchased this Handycam and absolutely love it. It is our family camcorder. Very easy to use, Touchscreen makes it idiot-proof. We view our movies through my Playstation 3 with the free app - looks unbelievably clear. Otherwise you can hook it up to any HD TV and the picture will look nice. At the point where I now have about 80GB worth of footage and trying to figure out what to do with it. Burning it to a standard DVD defeats the whole purpose. Uploading and converting it to the computer and THEN burning also too time-consuming. Be prepared to buy a DVDirect BluRay burner and an HDMI cable for another +$300. But hey, the memories are priceless, right?

Great Camera
4 Star Review By submax on Sony - Official Store - Dec 29, 2011

Love this Camera.Got a great deal on open box at Best Buy. Previous buyer had problems with his computer and blamed it on the camera. ( Conversation with store rep was recorded and still on hard drive.) His loss, my gain. Nothing wrong it at all. Need to play with the software somemore, but so far, not liking it much.

Clean
4 Star Review By Synsoflife on Sony - Official Store - Dec 13, 2011

Quick and easy to use for just about any occasion. I've had it about three weeks and have recorded night, indoor bright and dim lighting and the images are clean. I don't like the supplied software for viewing and editing your images. I can't seem to figure out exactly how to move/copy pictures or video to another file/folder.

Great Quality Camera
4 Star Review By AKLYNN on Sony - Official Store - Nov 16, 2011

The quality of the picture is fantastic. I had an issue with the focus from time to time. You also lose several secs of video from the time you open to when you can zoom or go wide. If those are not things that matter this is a wonderful camera. It's lightweight and easy to use out of the box.

Great Capture of Indian Wedding
4 Star Review By Superman1989 on Sony - Official Store - May 14, 2011

I recently bought this camcorder for my sister's Indian wedding and I'm really glad I did. First off, it does record really well in dim light. Second, it captures GREAT video and images with bright light. BUT, as I tried to video tape outside with bright sunlight, the camcorder did not capture anything! it was simply to bright. That is my only negative so far. Overall it really is a great camcorder. IF you want quality, this camcorder will deliver it!
