Sony's Basic HDD Cam
4 Star Review   By member Bluffy - Apr 20, 2007

Strengths: Very light weight, Relatively cheaper , Extremely user friendly

Weakness: Low light poor-quality video, No video download without base

Lowest of the Sony Hard drive camcorders. Video quality not that great compared to the higher models. Very handy and it can hold movies more than 6 hours! You need to carry the base if you want to download to computer. Ac adapter can be used while shooting. No remote. Sony gives 90 day warranty

Sony Handycam DCR-SR40
4 Star Review   By member jolschew - Mar 2, 2007

Strengths: This camcorder stores tons of hours of video and organizes them easily in the menu for viewing or burning to a dvd-rw. The touch screen is very easy to navigate and use.

Weakness: I had trouble using the supplied software for the 1 touch dvd burn so I had to use a movie maker program I already had and transferred my movies that way. There is no expansion slot for a mic/light.

I was worried when I purchased this camera because there was no input area for a light or microphone but after use I found that I didn't need one. The sound quality is great as well as its performance in low light. The menus are easy to navigate and the touch screen is convenient. I also like the base that serves as a charger/connection to your computer. It is light and the buttons are very easy to locate when using.

4 Star Review   By member moscow223 - Feb 28, 2007

Weakness: Wont work with Mac without $100 software (Daniel Long - 1/22/07) While the camera movie camera works fine the snap shots were only so-so. The biggest drawback for me is not being compatible with mac with out a $100 worth of software that should be free.

Definitly a good buy. For the price, you can get 7 hrs of recording, 20 Optical Zoom and come on....IT'S A SONY.
4 Star Review   By member samirdoshi - Feb 5, 2007

Strengths: Small, Great Lenses, Easy to use, Thumbnails feature, 7 hrs of recording is more than enough, 20x Opt Zoom

Weakness: Poor quality with NIGHT SHOTS. Grainy and pixels visible while recording at night.

Thumbnails make it lot easier to delete any particular content. If you want to capture special moments of your family members, your trips and other imp. events of your life than this camcorder is right for you. But if you are a professional and need much more quality than regular users than you should look for something else. But I love this camera, as we've have been recording since the day we bought it and it's very easy to use and it's a hard drive camcorder, so there's no stress about changing the tapes/discs...makes life a lot easier for people like us who are not that tech savvy :)

So easy to use
5 Star Review   By member ragg61 - Jan 25, 2007

Strengths: hard drive records 7+ hours WITH NO TAPES, very easy to use, lightweight and comfortable in your hand, fine picture quality, easy connectors to TV and PC

Weakness: no remote, average size LCD screen

So easy to understand that was using it literally within an hour of purchase with just a glance at the manual. Love how lightweight it is. It's size makes it easy to hold and it's compact to take everywhere. Also, no carrying around tapes or worrying about changing tapes in the middle of recording recitals or events (which happened to us with our old camcorder). Picture quality is great - and that is with viewing it on a 42" plasma screen TV. May not be for sophisticated recording or editing, but for someone looking to have a simple way to record family events or vacations this is terrific.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR40
4 Star Review   By member schung6 - Dec 13, 2006

Strengths: Easy to use. Light weight. No need to use DV or DVD to record.

Weakness: Image quality is just better than VCD video. Not as sharp as DVD.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR40 is suitable for people who just want a basic and easy to use camcorder. It contains most of the basic functions. It is very compact and light. The control through touch screen LCD is straitforward. However, the image quality is not as good as DVD, since the resolution is only 640 x 480, which is the only weakness.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR40
3 Star Review   By member maanshan2002 - Dec 11, 2006

Strengths: Easy to use for midlevel user, light weight. Overall, the design is sufficient and potentially eliminates the need for media.

Weakness: Plain silver-plastic finish isn't attractive.

The touch-screen interface is a little confusing at the beginning. But actually, you don't have to do much with it once you set it up for the first time. The color looks real when you turn off the nightshot plus when shooting indoor and the lights are on. It is not bright with the nightshot plus on. Make sure to compare under these two settings the first time you shot. The editing interface is easy to use.

DCR-SR40
2 Star Review   By member nametaken - Dec 5, 2006

Strengths: Ease of use of media

Weakness: Image quality consistant with 1995 Handycam. 640x480 resolution assures that with an HD tv you will see pixels. Indoor lighting produces extremely grainy pictures, even at moderatly low light.

I purchased this camera thinking that being relatively new, it would produce a decent picture. I was severly dissapointed to discover once I had done my homework, that sony had recycled a CCD with the image quality of the old 1995 Handycams. Most new cameras record over the megapixel mark, but the SR40 comes in at .68 MP. I kept it for the night, thinking that perhaps it just performed poorly in low light conditions, but discovered the next morning that the quality was less grainy, but the trailing pixels were still very evident. Perhaps I am spoiled with a big screen High Def TV, but when I could spend half the price on a MiniDV camera with 3x the resolution, I choose the slower media format over the ease of the HDD. Mine was returned the day after... ******* UPDATE ******** This week I bought the Panasonic PV-GS300, and am very pleased at the image quality delivered by the MiniDV camcorder (Excellent low light compared to the sony, Brilliant color, and no visible trailing pixels)... Apparently it wasn't the high quality of my tv making the video from the SR40 look terrible, it really was the poor quality of Sony's camcorder!

Good Product, Easy to Use
4 Star Review   By member barrel260 - Dec 3, 2006

Strengths: Easy mode for quick point and shoot recording

Weakness: Haven't found any yet.

The touch screen and night vision are nice. Not worrying about carrying extra disks around when on a longer vacation is also a bonus. Don't worry about getting another batter for longer use, haven't had any problems with it cutting out unless recording for an extended period of time.

4 Star Review   By member cobramovin - Nov 17, 2006

Strengths: Great that you don't need to worry about purchasing or carting around extra media to film. Goes straight to the hard drive. Compact size, easy to use.

Weakness: I really can't say there are any negatives. The salesperson claimed that camcorders that use the other media have a better quality, but without comparing side by side, I don't see any inferior quality

Another plus is the fact that it takes great indoor shots. The night mode is great. The camera function is not great, but that's not what I purchased it for. The zoom is sufficient. Great overall camera, easy to use right out of the box!

DCR-SR40 30 GB HDD Camcorder
4 Star Review   By member deanandmichiko - Oct 15, 2006

Strengths: Very light weight, clear lcd screen, easy to use buttons

Weakness: The battery it comes with has a very short life even on a full charge

So far this camcorder is everything we thought it would be. The camcorder is extremely light and the buttons are very easy to figure out. The set up was easy as well. From what we have recorded so far the color is very good even indoors. The sound is very clear and sounds good overall. The touch screen controls for playback are an interesting feature but I am concerned in the long run it may cause issues with what you see on the LCD screen. Hopefully Sony has taken this in to consideration in their development of the product.
