4.5 Star Review  photographyblog.com - Feb 16, 2012

The AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G is a fast mid-range telephoto prime lens for Nikon full-frame DSLRs. With a maximum aperture of f/1.8 and an iris diaphragm with seven rounded blades, the AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G should be able to create excellent bokeh effects. Nikon 85mm f/1.8G AF-S FX Review
5 Star Review  photo.net - Jun 4, 2012

Traditionally, in 35mm-format (i.e. Nikon FX) photography, along with 105mm, the 85mm focal length is considered to be ideal for portrait photography. Perhaps 105mm is better for “head and shoulder” type images while the 85mm can cover a bit more. Over the years, Nikon has had various 85mm lenses that are highly regarded, including a 85mm/f1.4 AF-D and a 85mm/f1.8 AF-D from the early part of the AF era. Two years ago, Nikon added a 85mm/f1.4 AF-S, incorporating an in-lens silent-wave AF motor. While it is an excellent lens, the $1700 price tag plus the bulk and weight is not for everybody. In January 2012, Nikon added this f1.8 version when they introduced their D4 flag-ship sports DSLR. With a very reasonable $499 suggested price, this new 85mm/f1.8 AF-S is an attractive alternative, especially for those who are interested in...

Just got it today, looks used
3 Star Review   By GD Photos on Adorama - Oct 15, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This is the second one I bought. I love the first one but I ended up giving to my brother. I bought a 24-70mm to see if it can be a replacement, but I felt the 85mm still performed better. I was so excited to get this but a bit disappointed as the item looks used or at least open box - there's tear on the plastic packaging, manual is creased. I only took a couple of test shots, seems to be ok, so hopefully I don't have to go through the hassle or returning. I know there's a Nikon warranty, just don't like the feeling I didn't get a brand new lens when I paid for one. Maybe I'm being too picky lol. Anyways I will probably try another store next time, still need a wide angle lens.

I bought this lens speciically for portraits and candids of people. I shot some candids of my grandkids at f/1.8 and love the results. Great color rendition and creamy bokeh. Never tried the f/1.4 version but this lens is good enough that I don't see the need to spend the extra money.

Excellent Portrait Lens
5 Star Review   By GA-med student on Adorama - Aug 14, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This is an excellent portrait lens! Despite being made in China, it feels sturdy. Most of my lenses are the older, more sturdy prime lenses, made in Japan: 28-70mm AF f/2.8, 80-200mm AF f/2.8, 200mm AF micro f/4, 300mm AF f/4, so I don't like the feel of cheap, plasticy lenses. However, this lens is well constructed, light, focuses fast. I replaced my Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 with this lens. This lens not much sharper, despite the reviews, but is AF, which is worth it to me.

Sharp and fast
5 Star Review   By Aaron on Adorama - May 4, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This lens is a nice lightweight alternative to my 70-200mm for portraits. It's also a bargain compared to the F1.4g and about as sharp. Only dislike is the slighly noisier AF compared to my other Nikon lenses.
