Camera Labs – Nikkor 70-300mm VR lens review
4 Star Review  cameralabs.com - Sep 28, 2007

Ultimately Nikon DSLR owners are spoilt when it comes to telephoto zooms. They have two quality options to choose from without breaking the bank: the budget but surprisingly respectable DX 55-200mm VR, and the up-market 70-300mm VR which delivers improvements in all respects at an affordable price. If your budget’s tight, the DX 55-200mm VR remains a superb choice, but if you can afford to spend the extra and don’t mind the additional size and weight, the 70-300mm VR won’t disappoint. Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED
3.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Nov 30, 2011

The Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a mid-grade telephoto lens designed specifically for any type of professional "hand-held" photography. Nikon claims the vibration reduction and image stabilization support allows "dramatically sharper still images and video capture". The NIKKOR 70-300mm IF-ED lens is equipped with a 4.3x zoom ratio and provides what Nikon claims to be image quality equal to that of the "105-450mm lens on the 35mm SLR model". The NIKKOR 70-300mm model also includes a silent wave motor for quiet operation, and two Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements to help eliminate chromatic aberration (the failure of multiple lenses to converge images and colors on a single point; which leads to blurry and unclear photos while zoomed in). The Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED includes additional features such as a Nikon F-Bayonet mounting type, three available focus modes, a 67mm filter size, a 9 blade ... PROS: (1) bokeh is beautiful and smooth, provides a great backdrop (2) AF is very quick, locks right on to the subject (3) image stabilization does a great job enabling handheld shooting (4) minimal flare or vignetting (5) nice zoom range, stays sharp throughout ... CONS: (1) plastic casing feels a bit delicate, need to be careful with it (2) cant auto-focus at the 300mm range (3) could be faster, cant reach f/4

Very pleased with this lens
5 Star Review   By Linda on Adorama - Sep 24, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I take lots of wildlife photos and had used this lens on a friend's D50 to take some photos while we were on vacation and after seeing those results put this lens on my wish list. So far I am extremely happy with the quality of the images I am getting with this lens. While my friend uses this lens as his "walk around lens", I do find that 70mm has me backing off of subjects since I'd gotten used to walking around with the 55-300mm lens. But carrying a second lens for times when I may want to go from zoom to wide angle is not a problem for me.

A fair upgrade
4 Star Review   By Tim the Red on Adorama - Aug 20, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I owned a Nikon 70-300 AF-G that I used on my D80 body. When I upgraded recently to the D600, I was looking for a higher quality tele zoom. This lens is a reasonable upgrade. To be honest I was hoping for a bit more when I upgraded, but that's not this lens's fault. It's definitely better glass and has a better feel than the previous generation AF-G 70-300, and the VR helps get sharper shots. It's not the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 I wanted, but it's also not $9,000. If you're looking for a consumer tele zoom, this lens is a reasonable choice. It's certainly much improved over the previous generation.

5 Star Review   By Backroads traveler on Adorama - May 28, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I bought this lens to compliment a 16-85 Nikon to cover everything up to extreme telephoto. It does the job very well. It is well made, but not too heavy. The zoom range is a very good compromise. My photos are sharp, and the auto focus is fast and quiet.

I use it for reach at well lit sporting events. I find that it works better "hand-held" in low light with VR "on", than on a tripod. I think the mirror contributes to vibration at longer lengths. This will be problematic in low light.

4 Star Review   Crutchfield.com

Crutchfield has collected 5 user reviews for this product with an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. The most recent reviewer said, "First of all, I do a lot of research before buying. After many days and nights of analysis, I had no doubts about investing in this Nikon 70-300 lens. I haven't done many photos, but the ones done, look great, outstanding. A B+H 1.5 Skylight filter was added. My camera is a Nikon D7000, using a class 10 SDHC-UHC-1 card. My main use is watching birds, scenery, water falls, and close ups. No complaints about the quality, the weight and the lens aperture. 100% satisfied. Yes, I recommend this lens. One more comment, buying from Crutchfield is very pleasant and rewarding."

This is the best Nikon telephoto zoom all things considered. Although not as sharp as the 70-200 f2.8 VR zoom, if is far lighter, far less expensive, shorter, and really quite sharp with excellent contrast. I have the 70-200 f2.8 VR as well, but only use
