Nikon AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2D
2.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Nov 4, 2011

The Nikon AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2D is a high-end digital SLR camera lens. Nikon promotes this lens as a classic-style portrait lens. In promotion, Nikon emphasizes their Defocus Image Control technology, which lets you control the spherical abberation with a control ring, thereby allowing you to control the degree of focus in the foreground and background. The AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2D also has rear focusing, which makes for a faster overall AF (Auto Focus) performance. That being said, this lens is also equipped with manual focus. The minimum distance that this lens needs to focus on an object is three feet. The large maximum aperture (2) helps with taking pictures in low light. The Nikon AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2D comes with a 72mm lens cap and a rear lens cap. Features Defocus Image Control Rear focusing 72mm lens cap Rear lens cap Nikon F-Bayonet mount type Focal length: 105mm Maximum aperture: 2 Minumum aperture: 16 Built-in lens hood CL-38 lens case 22.6oz. weight Dimensions: ... PROS: (1) light gathering is excellent, gets great colors (2) fast at f/2 and stays sharp at the corners (3) sharpness is excellent, details come through extremely well (4) bokeh is very creamy, looks like an oil painting, makes pictures look gorgeous ... CONS: (1) a bit complicated to operate, need to understand all the settings to take a proper picture (2) need to use a tripod, camera shake will cause problems (3) very heavy lens, hard to hold properly unless a tripod is being used (4) depth of field is narrow enough that it isnt very forgiving

Wonderful with D7100

Thought I'd add on to my prior review. Upgraded to a D7100. Shot two swim meets with the D7100/105 DC. I like this combo a lot. Imagine shooting with an impossibly light 210mm f2...with the 1.3 crop mode that's what you get. Focus is bang on every time. W

Great portrait lens. Great for formal events, i.e. weddings and dances. Also great for family events. Slow focusing, but the image/glass quality is undoubtedly the best Nikon has to offer.

Exciting Lens
4 Star Review   By Fred on Adorama - Sep 4, 2011    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I was using this on my D300 & was not entirely happy at first. You have to practice with this lens & see how it works with different settings. That takes some time & practice. However, if you just shoot the lens with out using the DC feature it is simple

105mm DC Portrait Lens

I personally use the lens for Portraits 95% of the time. Better, more pleasing skin tones than the 85mm 1.4. Focus speed is not as fast as the AF-S lens, but focus accuracy is more important for Portraits. The focus accuracy is spot on. One of Nikons best

Sharp, fast performer....
5 Star Review   By member fraczekp - Jan 12, 2008

Strengths: Super sharp, f/2, RF

Weakness: Built-in hood is useless, but is it really a reson to complain?

I've been using this lens for over a year now. It is very sharp (I compared it with my Micro 105 AF-D and they are almost identical in results). It does have little more CA than the Micro one, but nothing unacceptable. Nice and fast (2.0) and rather sharp wide open. To reach the "peak" sharpness at the edges of your frame you need to be at least at f/4 but that is not to say that f/2 is bad -- it's actually awesome! I have also the 135mm DC and this one is used more on my digital camera. The 135mm DC is awesome too, but it becomes too narrow for what I want the lens to do. I tend to use that one of film with great results. Now, let's talk about DC. If you are considering this as a strong selling point -- don't. Problem with DC is that it doesn't have a drastic impact on the out of focus blur (and if it does, it afffects your in-focus areas too!) and it takes a lot of experimentation and "intimacy" to get good results. Most of users end up being disappointed with the DC feature after many unsuccessful shots - it takes practice. It is DOF (aperture and distance) dependent and you won't see it in your viewfinder clearly so it becomes little tricky to use. Honestly, I use it very rarely as I am very happy with the bokeh and shallow DOF that comes with f/2 and 105mm. In modern photography (digital) you can do exactly what the DC will give you using software so instead of banking on DC, I suggest you bank on some good editing skills. I really give this lens 5 stars -- it is a classic that you will want to keep, super sharp, solid, fast with great color rendering. Now, if you are not set on the DC and have few extra $$$, you might want to look up the 85mm 1.4! **EDIT** The new site format doesn't do a good job at captions, so here is the order of pics: 1) f/2 With No DC 2) f/2 With DC at Max to Rear (max background blur) 3) f/2 With DC at Max to Front (max softening effect)

one of Nikkor's best
5 Star Review   By brianmcasey[@] on Adorama - Oct 23, 2007    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This is one of the sharpest lenses I have ever owned. The contrast is amazing, and bokeh is to be looked up to by most other lenses. If you are looking for a tight portrait lens this is the one. Defocus control is revolutionary.

Portrait Lense- Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D
5 Star Review   By member ds76 - Aug 15, 2007

Strengths: Unique Defocus Control; Perfect Bokeh; Like a "tank" build quality

Weakness: Purple fringe on DSLR; Noisy focus.; Lack of VR/AFS feature;

The Nikkor AF 105mm f/2D DC is one of two Defocus Control lenses in the Nikon lens line-up. It is a very high quality, versatile tele/portrait lens. The resolution figures are excellent when using the Nikkor as a conventional lens. The Defocus Control (DC) feature gives you superior control over background and foreground blur - some portrait and still-life photographers will certainly desire such a detailed controlled over the bokeh (the out-of-focus blur) although it requires quite a bit of experience to master it. Vignetting, distortions and lateral CAs are very low and nothing to worry about in the field. The build quality of the lens is excellent whereas the AF (relying on the slotted drive screw) is a bit dated by now. Overall, if you are interested in portrait photography, it is definitley an excellent investment. And i hope a VR/AFS version is going to launch in the future.

Excellent Lens but Needs Updating
3 Star Review   By member rocks1999 - Apr 16, 2007

Strengths: Build quality. Very nice boken. Large aperture.

Weakness: Price. CA on DSLRs.

The only blemish of this lens is the purple edges, but you can always reduce this effect in NX. The DC is a nice bonus and you don't need it realy. The boken is already excellent without any DC setting. Wish Nikon will update this lens by adding AF-S, VR and optimization for DSLRs.
