Nikon AF Zoom NIKKOR 80-200mm f/2.8D ED
2 Star Review  productwiki.com - Nov 22, 2011

The Nikon AF Zoom NIKKOR 80-200mm f/2.8D ED is a low-cost mid-range zoom lens for sports and nature photography. While it lacks top-range features such as Image Stabilization, it has the ability of keeping a fast f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, allowing for photography of moving subjects at a distance. 3 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements are used inside the lens to improve resolution and contrast, and a Super Integrated Coating reduces internal flaring for true color representation. Distance information can be found on the lens itself for use with external lighting processes, and 77 mm screw-on filters can be attached for additional effects. Features Focal Length: 80 - 200 mm Zoom: 2.5x Aperture: f/2.8 - f/22 Angle of View: 8 - 20 deg (DX-format), 12 - 30 deg (FX-format) Compatible Format(s): FX, DX, FX in DX Crop Mode, 35mm Film Diaphragm Blades: 9 Distance Information 3 ED Glass (Elements) Super ... PROS: (1) 2.8 aperture provides excellent picture quality in low-light indoor settings - ideal for capturing fast-paced content, especially sports like hockey and basketball (2) Ultra-wide visibility enables high-quality landscape shooting - great for long-distance establishing shots including skylines and panoramas (3) Excellent overall quality at the sub-$1000 price point - speed, build quality and picture capabilities are major selling points ... CONS: (1) Not recommended for users who own a D40 or D40x model - unit is somewhat incompatible with these cameras, with auto-focus disabled due to profile discrepancies (2) Unit is relatively heavy, even amongst telephoto units - many users will resort to using a tripod/monopod stand for extended shooting applications (3) Autofocus component is fairly noisy - not recommended for candid nature shooting where silence is imperative (4) Lack of vibration reduction capabilities may limit action-shot capabilities - depending on skill level, some users may be better-suited to the 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR lens

I heard too many good comments on this lens. But found the image is not very sharp, even using on tripod. A little disappointed on this lens. I tried this lens on my D200, D7000 and D800. Non of the images are comparable to my 24-70mm.

Top quality, just what you would expect in a pro lens from Nikon. Tripod or monopod is a must in most conditions as this lens does not have VR. If you can't justify 2x the price for the 70-200, then this lens is for you.

A brilliant lens: sharp, beautiful & well constructed. If you have FX body do not hesitate. However if you're looking to use it on DX, don't bother, its range is to tight and its to heavy to match the DX bodies properly. Get the Sigma 100-300 if you want

It is the best lens

Outstanding lens. I owned both the tamron and sigma, which were good but had slow focus issues or softness issues. The nikon is amazing. solid build, good focus and top notch optics. You know you will own this lens for a long time once you use it. Absolut

Solid Lens
4 Star Review   By dylanmj on Adorama - Sep 22, 2009    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

Have been very pleased with the images from this lens on a full frame D700. It isn't a light lens, but I purposely buy equipment that is durable and can take abuse. I am quite confident that this lens will be able to take whatever punishment is dished out

Great Lens!
4 Star Review   By Peter on Adorama - Sep 15, 2009    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I've used this lens for quite a bit of sports photography and the the results are excellent. Great in low light. I only wish the current Nikon teleconverters were compatible. I think this is a great, high performing telephoto lens for the serious hobbyist

I use this mainly for portraits, action photography, aviation photos - planes taking off and landing. Great under low light. Rugged and solidly built will take a lot of abuse. I chose this over the AF-S version because it is backwards compatible with my N

Excellent piece of Glass
5 Star Review   By Gordo on Adorama - Jun 7, 2009    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This lens is wonderfully sharp. I would recommend it to anyone using Nikon bodies. Although a bit heavy the use of a monopod in most situations is no burden.

I waited a long time to get a lens like this. Saved my money over a two year period. I am an avid wildlife photographer. This lens filled the void I had with my len's. I have the top (long range) and the short (macro), but had nothing in between. What a s

I'm still working out the kinks...I purchased this mainly for baseball but have found I love it for all areas. Trying to get my settings right for sharp photos but I'm sure that will come with practice. The bokeh is wonderful at 2.8! I'm currently using i

A tribute to Nikon
5 Star Review   By Kestrelhawk on Adorama - Mar 20, 2009    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

All the good things you heard about this lens are true. I bought a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens in January, and used it for a few months. I didn't like the color fringing and the loss of sharpness after zooming past 200mm. I had a 1.4X Tamron pro teleconverter

One of Nikon's best values
5 Star Review   By hesterphoto21 on Adorama - Jan 7, 2009    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This is a great lens for the money. Nikon's best value (besides the 50mm f1.8) if you need a FX lens. Works great on D3's and D200's. Finds and tracks focus very well.

Very Unhappy
1 Star Review   By redhawk44 on Adorama - Dec 29, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This lens has a terrible backfocusing problem. Nikon has had the lens for 6 weeks and can't/won't repair it. [...] I guess I'm screwed.

I have been taking High School sports photgraphs at night with much slower lenses and what a difference the right equipment makes on the pics. The weight takes a little getting used to but great color, focus is fast enough for HS football.

Nikon 80-200 f2.8
4 Star Review

Strengths: Fast, sharp, good color

Weakness: It is not a Silent Wave motor and is louder. Also 80-200mm f2.8 leaves a gap if you are trying all 2.8 lenses.

This lens although old is still very sharp, clear, and vibrant in color. I did a comparative study between this lens and the 70-200 VR f2.8 and did not see any difference in picture quality. The upside is since this lens is from the film era, you dont get any issues with the D3 as you do with the 70-200.

Excellent Pro Zoom

This is just the perfect 80-200 lens for those who don't want to spend the money for an AF-S version. It's tack sharp even at 2.8 and built like a tank. Standard in my setup

Best propped with the belly if you got one with the strap around the neck; it's not a light lens. Awesome sharpness and fast AF. My favorite lens for backpacking and shooting scenery/architecture. Well worth the investment. Looking to get a 28-70mm or 35-

A Real Pro Lens for a Bargain Price
5 Star Review   By Roger on Adorama - Oct 4, 2007    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This is the best fast tele-zoom you can buy for under $1K - period. My first Nikon was a used Nikormatt FTN with a 50mm f/1.4 non-AI lens I bought off an AP photograher in Vietnam in 1967. Yep, I still have the 50mm lens, had it AI-d and use it sometimes

I always wanted to do sports and action shots but, I never had the right lense. I purchased this lens to go with my D200 and the images are amazing. Fast focus and crystal clear. The images below have been cropped only. No other editing has been done.

Great
5 Star Review   By member magrincinho - Feb 6, 2006

Strengths: F/2.8,nikon

Weakness: none so far

i use this lens for my d70 to shoot soccer games. i had another Nikon lens but it dint give me enough light so i bought this lens. it gives me more light so that my pictures barley need to be fixed. i need fast focusing and this lens is fast enough to shoot soccer and gives me enough light to shoot at night in a stadium. it is a little heavy but then what do you expect. i would suggest you but if you need this lens.

Great lens-Reasonable price
5 Star Review   By member kevro - Jan 13, 2006

Strengths: Build quality, optics, smooth zoom/focus, opens to 2.8

Weakness: Auto focus is not lightning speed

My first impression of this lens was that it was not as large as I was expecting. Many people will lead you to believe it's a tank...but it's really not that large. Now it certainly dwarfs many of the "G" type Nikkors like the 28-200 but I find that it handles quite well. The weight is what I would expect from the strong build...not a big deal though. I have read about a few people having issues with the autofocus being slightly off in their D70, I do not have that problem and it doesn't seem to be a very common issue. The 2.8 aperture provides awesome out of focus backgrounds (bokeh) when shooting portraiture. The subject becomes a solitary point of focus and the background is soft and undistracting. I thought the autofocus would be faster although I am not disappointed in its' performance, it's certainly faster than my Nikkor 70-300 ED. To test the focus speed I set the camera to autofocus-continuous and had my dog charge toward me. The autofocus tracked with my dog perfectly. I guess it just seems slow from 5 feet to infinity but you don't usually need speed when you're shooting between those distances. The ED glass is great at producing very contrasty images with good color. Build quality is excellent and I would definitely recommend this lens to anybody wishing to enter the pro lens category.
