Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
3.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Sep 23, 2011

The Canon EF 35mm F/1.4L USM is a high-end wide-angle camera lens. This lens is recommended by Canon for use with Canon SLR cameras. Canon promotes this lens as being for serious photographers. The Aspherical lens element of this lens correct abberations. The rear floating focusing system of the Canon EF 35mm F/1.4 USM makes it so that high picture quality can be obtained over the entire focusing range. The f/1.4 maximum aperture of this lens gives it the ability to create shallow depth of field effects. The eight-blade diaphragm of this lens (which is an improvement over the related EF 35mm f/2s eight-blade diaphragm) helps to create background blur. The Autofocus feature of the Canon EF 35mm F/1.4L USM is quick and quiet, and runs on a ring type USM motor. Manual focus, which professional photographers may prefer, is also an available option. Features Aspherical lens element Rear floating focusing system Choice of Autofocus or manual focus Ring type USM motor 35mm focal length ... PROS: (1) Performs very well in low-light applications - f/1.4 aperture speed provides natural, organic results (2) Excellent overall build quality - unit is rugged, durable and well-weighted to suit most common SLR models (3) Picture quality is remarkably sharp - experienced photographers are likely to purchase the lens for its clarity alone (4) Bokeh component performs very well - provides gentle background blurring without distraction or loss of subject clarity (5) Auto-focus is very fast - provides sufficient "L-Series" response, suitable for spontaneous photography and candid applications ... CONS: (1) Specific feature set will likely turn away many users due to the price - common landscape and portrait capabilities are available within much more affordable lenses (2) Requires a great deal of interaction with the subject to attain sufficient quality - pictures may turn out more dynamic, but are very difficult to set up initially

5 Star Review   By Yulia Gorbachenko on Adorama - Jul 23, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I've bought this lens to be used on a 5D for shooting environmental portraits in low light and for landscapes. It's fast, very sharp wide open, beautiful color and contrast.

Who Need Leica Lenses?
5 Star Review   By Sunbounce on Adorama - Jul 7, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

Having been a Leica shooter for 25 plus years I have been trying to find the right digital combination. The 5D and this lens smokes everything else I have had the pleasure of playing with, and that includes the M8. Like being in a meditative state I am ha

A fantastic Do-It-All lens
5 Star Review   By Brent on Adorama - Jul 1, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

As I said in my title, This lens is a Do-It-All tool. It produces very nice images consistently. The contrast is Phenomenal and the sharpness is equally as impressive. I have no problems using this lens wide open. It is also on my camera ALL the time.

35L
5 Star Review   By member KPBara - Jun 5, 2008

Strengths: Sharp wide open across entire frame, solid construction, fast and accurate focus

Weakness: Price

This is an ideal 'standard' lens for a 1.6x cropped camera like the Canon 40D. Compared to any zoom lens, the viewfinder is wonderfully bright. This lens is sharp in the center wide open, like the much less expensive Sigma 30mm/1.4, but what is immediately obvious is that, unlike the Sigma, sharpness is uniform across the entire frame. The 35L has a great feel: smooth focus ring, solid construction, just right proportion on a medium-sized SLR, and beautiful front element. Focus is fast, silent, and sure. The only perceived drawback is the 'plastic' feel compared to newer lenses with appealing textured finish. Highly recommended.

Limited use low light lens
4 Star Review   By Bengt Nyman on Adorama - Mar 9, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

Nice but limited use 1.4 lens. I use it for low light music and theater performances capturing a dark auditorium and audience. The 35 mm is too long to be a wide angle lens and too short for stage images or portraits.

perfect wide-normal lens
5 Star Review   By LKP on Adorama - Mar 6, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

Tack sharp. Beautiful color and contrast. Very nice mid-wide focal length on a full frame camera, or normal focal length on a crop camera. Can be used for just about anything, even portraits.

Expensive doesn't always mean better
3 Star Review   By dave on Adorama - Feb 22, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

not as sharp as the cheaper 50mm 1.4L at wide open aperture. the lens performs well at f/2.0, but not worth the extra 800 bucks. their built quality are also inconsistent. had to return the first one, the quality was even worse.

Excellent Quality
5 Star Review   By Brian on Adorama - Jan 21, 2008    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

Very nice addition to a zoom-based lens inventory. I'm shooting a Canon 40D. With the 35/1.4, I get an effective 56mm effective focal length, about as close to a "normal" lens as I can find in primes. Overall, I'm very impressed with build quality and opt

Canon 35mm F1.4 L
5 Star Review   By member qzhao92129 - Oct 20, 2007

Strengths: Great sharpness, Beautiful bokeh, Amazing F/1.4, good build quality.

Weakness: Pricey but worthy it and you can do nothing about it if you need that quality.

Purchased since July 2007 for my small Canon XT. Fit the camera surprisingly well. Not too big. Weight is well balanced with XT. Very fast and quiet focusing under low light. Very nice and beautiful bokeh. Color is just the Canon style, little yellowish, noticeable when you shoot at lawn. Little chromatic aberration sometimes. Very usable aperture. Great for indoor portraits as well as street shooting under dim light without flash. Perfect if weather-proof at this price range.

I use this lens a lot for outdoor, architectural shots, indoor, weddings, and travel. It is a bit heavy but delivers superb pictures. sharp lens worth evey dollar.

GREAT TRAVEL LENS ON 5D
5 Star Review   By Joe on Adorama - Jun 23, 2007    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I tried this lens on a 20D, but the tight crop wasted its potential. This was my first lens purchase just for the 5D. I recently took it on a trip to Italy with 2-L zooms from 16~70 and an 85 prime. Left them in the hotels...I wanted to see if I could rev

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM
5 Star Review   By member xufengl - May 11, 2007

Strengths: Large aperture, fast auto-focus, good build quality, great optics.

Weakness: Pricy.

This is one of few f/1.4 Canon lenses, and is one of the best Canon lenses in terms of build quality and optics. The focal length (35mm) is very useful on both full frame and APS-C Cameras. Under ISO-800, f/1.4 allows to take pictures under 60W light without flash. The Auto-focus is fast, reliable, and quiet even under such a dim light condition. The sharpness, color, and contrast are all great.

Canon 35mm F1.4 L
5 Star Review   By member skywalker168 - May 25, 2006

Strengths: Extremely sharp. Fast and quiet focus. Very well built.

Weakness: Noticable chromatic abberrations wide open. No weather seal for a lens at this price range.

This is probably one of Canon's best lenses. F1.4 is already very usable although depth of field is kind of too shallow to control. From F1.6, pictures become extremely sharp. Very nice contrast and pleasant colors too. No noticeable distortion or vignetting on 20D, but very noticeable chromatic aberration wide open. It has ring-type USM, so auto-focus is very fast and quiet. Price is on the high side, but if you are looking for a sharp big aperture lens, this one definitely should be on top of your list.

1st Class Prime
5 Star Review   By member bluejeff - May 6, 2006

Strengths: 1. Quality, Quality, and Quality. 2. Light in weight 3. F1.4

Weakness: A little Pricy. Filter size.

This is the best standard prime that Canon have in the market now. Both the color and the quality of the pictures from this lens is simply great!! The focus is fast while the aperture is big. This lens is certainly the indoor photographer's favorite! For its price, yes, it is expensive. However, once you have bought it, you will not regret it. The only other thing I can think of is its filter size. I just wish its size is not 72mm as most of my other lenses are 77mm. I will have to buy the UV, CPL...filters for this in 72mm then, which is going to be another add-up cost.

One of the sharpest primes.
5 Star Review

Strengths: Build quality,sharpness,color,fast usable f/1.4

Great on 1Ds FF,even better on 1.4 crop, best on a 1.6 crop. Love it as a full body portrait lens from 10-15' without a flash.

review for Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/1.4L
4 Star Review   By member jackyhan - Oct 12, 2005

Strengths: Excellent Build Good low light performance Consistent performance

Weakness: Price Starting to show its age.

The build quality and heritage of his lens is unquestionable and for full frame sensors or 35mm, it is still in the top flight. As a standard prime on a cropped sensor dSLR it will do a good job, but might just be out-performed by some of the younger opposition.
