Description
To meet user demands for a fast EF-S zoom lens, Canon has specially designed a new lens with a large aperture of f/2.8 for select Canon Digital SLR cameras. The large circular aperture produces a shallow depth-of-field, creating background blur that draws attention to the photographic subject. The lens construction includes UD and aspherical elements, which deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range. Image Stabilizer lens groups shift to compensate for camera movement so that the image appears steady on the image plane, ensuring clear, crisp images, even in dim light. With a Ring-type USM, inner focusing and new AF algorithms, this lens achieves autofocus quickly and quietly, and with full-time mechanical manual focusing, manually adjusting the focus is possible even in AF mode.

Camera Labs – Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM review
4 Star Review  cameralabs.com - Jul 1, 2007

Ultimately while the EF-S 17-55mm makes a great premium zoom for EF-S body owners, you’ve really got to be into either portraiture or low-light photography to justify its higher cost. Most general photographers will be better served by the longer range, not to mention cheaper price of the EF-S 17-85mm. And if you like the sound of an f2.8 zoom but not the high cost, consider the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8; it may not have Image Stabilisation, quiet focusing, nor quite the same range as the Canon model, but offers a constant f2.8 aperture at a low price. If you're seriously into portraits or low light work though, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm will delight. The more you see what it’s optics are capable of, the more you find yourself taking shots under conditions you’d previously walk away from. Find out how the Canon 17-55mm compares against its closest rivals in our full review - and for a demonstration of this lens in action, check out our video tour.

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
3 Star Review  productwiki.com - Feb 15, 2011

The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is a fast zooming lens designed specifically for the Canon EOS 30D, 20D, 20Da, Digital Rebel XT and Digital Rebel. This lens has a large f/2.8 aperture, giving it increased light gathering abilities for distant targets. The aperture is circular and produces a shallow depth-of-field, naturally blurring the background and keeping the subject the focus of attention. The lens groups shift as the camera moves, creating a steady image even in low light conditions. Inner focusing allows the autofocus to be set without the need to adjust focus on the camera, and full-time manual allows for quick adjustments on the fly. Standard 77mm filters can use a screw-on attachment. Features Fast zoom lens EOS 30D, 20D, 20Da, Digital Rebel XT and Digital Rebel compatible Circular aperture Image Stabilizer Focal Length: 17-55mm Maximum Aperture: 1:2.8 Lens Construction: 19 elements in 12 groups Focus Adjustment: AF ... PROS: (1) Sharp to very sharp image throughout zoom range (2) image stabilizer (3) well built construction. very sturdy. (4) shallow depth-of-field (5) fixed professional aperture of f/2.8 - good for shooting in low light, can isolate a subject nicely ... CONS: (1) APS-C crop sensor only - cant be used if you upgrade (2) expensive (3) not an L-grade lens (4) corner sharpness is somewhat lacking at f/2.8 (5) high light falloff (vignetting) at f/2.8

A good indoor low-light lens
4 Star Review   By Happy photographer on Adorama - Nov 12, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

My most shots are outdoor of plants and wildlife. Recently, I shoot some indoor activities, such as musicals, plays, meetings, awards, etc. I use the lens with Canon T4i camera. I am struggling and learning. I had some good shots and some not so good shots. It could be due to my inexperience of indoor shooting. I wish the lens comes with more instructions and references.

This lens is fast and sharp. It replaced a Tamron 17-50 DiII VC. Incredible difference especially in low light. The only thing I miss is the zoom lock, but I can live.

5 Star Review   By Larryd6 on Adorama - Sep 24, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

This is a terrific lens. It is sharp, smooth & I couldn't be more pleased. Due to the price, it may not be for the casual user, but for those who want pure quality, this is it. It is a bit heavy. but not overly so. This is to be expected with a lens of this quality. I do professional real estate photography, & this is absolutely great for indoor shots. Works extremely well for outside work too as I can move in close to the property & still include a view of much of the home.

Great lens if you need the speed.
5 Star Review   By FPP on Adorama - Jul 18, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I use this lens on my 50D. I also have access to an 18-55mm kit lens. The kit lens is great for its price, but if you need a faster lens, this one is great. I am able to get pictures in locations that I could not with the kit lens due to the lack of light. I was in a moss garden on a very cloudy day and was able to get pictures when the other two in our group (also Canon users) could not. The image stabilization is very good (and welcome in the above situation). The colors are vibrant. Sharpness is excellent. Auto focus is fine. I really have no complaints about this lens. It covers a very useful (at least for me) focal range. I have a 10-22mm (which is also excellent) and I find myself using the 17-55 in many situations where I previously would have used the 10-22 (where I don't need the extra width obviously). It is considerably heavier than the 19-55mm, but that is because of the much better build quality and the faster maximum speed.

a good marker on the road to the perfect EF-S lens
4 Star Review   By member touristguy87 - Aug 2, 2007

Strengths: Speed and focus accuracy, image quality, sharpness, moderately priced

Weakness: 55mm is a little short but for about 80% of the shots that I want to take it is long enough

First, I would rather have something more like a 20-135. Beyond that this lens is the best that I have tried out of the 17-85 F4 and the 28-135 F3.6. I think the F2.8 is almost required to get decent focus accuracy and reliability. It may not need to be a *constant* F2.8 but at least at the wide angle it should be F2.8. The short porch is very nice, makes it easy to shoot whatever you are standing in front of, the 28-135 is just too long for this. The only thing this 17-55 leaves me wanting is another 2x or so of zoom range. It would be great at 20-100, even. Wide-angle at night only works for close-up subjects, and the 55mm limit means a lot of walking around to get a good crop on the shot. And you can't use "digital zoom" if you don't get a good focus, so with the Rebel XTi and just about every lens that I've tried, I can't rely on getting a good focus at high zoom. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. But otherwise, I think this lens is worth the $900, the 17-85 is worth the $400, I'd stay away from the 28-135 and the kit lens is not all that bad for "free". What I really want, now, and I guess I'm going to have to wait for, is a good-quality 20-120 or so, F2.8-F4.5ish lens with IS. There is no point in getting a lens that will not focus reliably. Now as far as speed...I've shot this camera handheld at night at full zoom and gotten good shots, plenty of times. Pick your poison: ISO1600 RAW to ISO400 jpeg, it'll do it for you.

Great walk around lens
5 Star Review   By member jyarza1 - Jul 8, 2007

Strengths: constant aperture, IS, USM, IQ

Weakness: vignetting, pricey

I love the constant aperture and IS. It's awesome for indoor handheld shooting. I wasn't used to such a wide aperture so it's easy to overdo the shallow DOF and have part of you subjects face (eg ears) out of focus when that wasn't your intention. It also takes great landscape and night photos. However, as expected for very wide angle lens there is some vignetting at the wide end but not usually a problem. However, becomes a major problem when using the lens hood between about 17-20mm against a bright uniform background (eg blue sky). it also seemed like the polarizing filter might have made it more obvious (?). Anyways, not a deal breaker of course but just something to be aware of. Others on the web have reported problems with dust. I have not had any dust problems after a month or so and I don't do anything special to prevent it. Overall a great lens. Blows the 18-55mm kit lens away.

5 Star Review   By member klut - May 24, 2007

Strengths: sharp, UWA to normal zoom coverage

Weakness: price, size (it's pretty bulky), EF-S mount only, no hood

This is one of the best EF-S lenses available on the market at this time. Lens is pretty sharp throughout, although it vignettes somewhat at 17mm. The price is a killer - $1000 for a non-L lens is just expensive. Build quality is average as well - it's not bad, but can't be compared to L lenses. I often use this lens as a general walk-around lens, although it is a bit too bulky for my taste. There are a couple of comprehensive reviews available on the web, so if you're considering buying one, check them out and compare to some other EF-S lenses. One site that comes to mind is www.slrlensreview.com - has a handson review,
