Strengths: It was light and somewhat compact. Price is fair for the quality.

Weakness: Small aperture, a bit shaky, could be better built. Manual focus may take time for some people.

I was given this lens along with a Rebel XTi for a rally. It was relatively dark, so the small aperture was a disadvantage. I wouldn't really recommend this lens; though it might work a bit better in

When I first bought this lens with my Rebel TX about 2 years ago, I didn't know anything about photography. Looking back on it, it showed in my willing to purchase this lens. I've since upgraded my equipment to a Canon 5D body, a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens

A Great Lens for the Money

If price is a consideration in buying a lens, this lens does a great job for the money. It isn't the top of the line but it works very well and you can get some very nice photos.

75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM EF
4 Star Review

Strengths: light, cheap.

Weakness: for the price i do not see much arguement for weakness.

I've read up some other reviews that have told me that at the longer end (betwenn 200-300mm) the picture becomes much softer, however seeing some pics it has taken at the lower end and top end i do not see much problem... it is much sharper at the 70mm region however it is expected at such a low price not to be PERFECT. Personally for the price, and the weight i think that it is a great lens for any person starting out. Good for portraiture and background blur ive found..

Canon 75-300 USM EF Lens
5 Star Review   By member smumford - Jul 10, 2005

Strengths: Crystal clear pictures, low price

I am using this lens on my Canon Digital Rebel, it is a great lens for such a low price. I read some reviews before I purchased this lens some were negative. I have not had any problems with the lens and all the pictures I have taken have been very sharp and clear.

4 Star Review   By member abeddes - Jul 22, 2004

Strengths: Price, AF speed

Weakness: Generally mediocre quality

I debated whether to give this lens 3 or 4 stars. For what it costs, it really is a pretty good lens. I've looked long and hard for something better without a huge price-tag, and there just isn't anything. So, just based on the overall value, I decided 4 stars was a more appropriate rating. Quality of the optics is not great. Max aperture of f/5.6 at the long end is kind of slow. Construction is kind of cheap (although it does have a metal mount). The USM is a cheap version that doesn't allow manual override. But, once again, considering this lens costs less than $200.00, I think Canon did a pretty good job of packing in as much quality as they could. So, although I would love to have a 300mm zoom (or even fixed) lens with superior optics and a constant f/4 or f/2.8 aperture, I am totally unwilling to pay over a $1000.00 for it. This lens will work for me just fine. Also on a positive note - because the total length of the lens (extended all the way out) is over 8 inches, to a photography neophite it actually looks very impressive hanging off the front of your camera. And, if you put a big hood on the end, it's even more intimidating. :)

4 Star Review   By member jcb_001 - Apr 19, 2004

Strengths: Low price, good optics, nice zoom range for the money

Weakness: Relatively small aperature (4.0-5.6) - but not bad considering the price. Better be using a high shutter speed/tripod to counteract hand shake.

I don't know what the other guy's problem was with "noise" from this lens - a lens doesn't introduce "noise" into a picture - a lens will be either produce a sharp picture with correct color and contrast, or otherwise it will introduce chromatic abberations and areas of blurriness. Probably the fact that the aperature is relatively small (4.0 - 5.6) lead to him not giving the CMOS sensor a proper exposure - hence the noise he experienced. His ISO could also have been too high - you get noticible noise with the Digital Rebel and 10d with your ISO above 400. I haven't had any problems with noise - in fact it takes better pictures at f/4.0 75mm than my 28mm-70mm 3.5-5.6 stopped down to f/8. Color and contrast are what I expect out of Canon and for the money you get a good bargain. If you are using the long end of the telephoto, you should be using a tripod. Otherwise upgrade to the IS version of this lens.

1 Star Review   By member windcruzer - Apr 16, 2004

Strengths: New USM motor focused quickly

Weakness: too much 'noise' in the pictures with the Canon Digital Rebel

I bought this lens becasue the more expensive mid range zooms were out of stock where I usually buy on the Internet. I used it less than 24 hours before I decided to send it back and wait for the better lens. It focused quickly but if the photos aren't sharp when you know you are in focus what good is it? Why Canon even sells such a junk lens is beyond me!
