Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Apr 7, 2011

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM (Ultrasonic Motor) Lens is a medium level product in the Canon L Series 70-200mm product line. The 70-200mm L lens family has many similarities in common, like focal length range, top notch image quality with build quality to match, constant wide apertures (f/2.8 or f/4) over their entire zoom range, and, fast and accurate auto focusing benefiting from Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor). The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM Lens is about 1.3 lbs heavier, 0.8" longer, and 0.3" wider than its smaller models. The faster f/2.8 aperture is helpful for isolating a subject from a distracting background and for gaining action-stopping shutter speeds. At 200mm, f/2.8 can provide more blur background as compare to f/4. The primary benefit the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L USM Lens has over the non-IS version is IS (Image Stabilization); but unlike its IS models, the Canon ... PROS: (1) reliable operation, can see some heavy use without any problems (2) durable enough to take a few bumps without it affecting performance (3) easy and intuitive control ring interface (4) auto-focus is fast and accurate, finds the subject right away (5) output is consistent throughout the zoom range ... CONS: (1) very heavy and bulky, throws off the balance of the camera severely and is cumbersome to carry (2) not weather sealed like its IS brethren (3) no image stabilization (IS) - lower overall performance compared to IS lenses

Fast lens, sharp focus
4 Star Review   By Redhead Mandy on Adorama - Oct 16, 2013

I recently switched from Nikon to Canon and I bought this lens to replace my Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8. I am sure the fact that I'm now using it on a Mark III makes a difference as well - but I am blown away by how sharp these images are and how fast it autofocuses. I use this lens to shoot HS football at night as well as indoor volleyball and church weddings, and it allows me to get great shots from a distance. I wish I had the cash to buy capability for 300mm, but this one is doing the trick for now. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't fit as snugly onto my Mark III as I would like - there's a little wiggle where it connects to the body and I'm not sure why. I've never felt that in a lens before. I also need to invest in a monopod - I tried to shoot some deer in a field hand-held (they snuck up on me) and all of the images were blurry. Darn.

Big Glass
4 Star Review   By Chas on Adorama - Jul 25, 2013

This is a fine glass lens, a lot of glass. The lens is far too heavy to use without high shutter 500+ or tripod. This makes the lens useful and and very good when you know what you will shoot and can take time to set up for it. I found it to be a bit soft at 2.8, But it may haven been the lens I used. I think the IS to be an improvement and a better why to go. If you need more flexibility with a 70-200, the Canon EF 70-200-mm f/2.8L IS II USM Auto-Focus Lens, would be a better, but more costly answer.

It was hard to pull the trigger on a lens that costs this much money, at least for me anyway. And, I hesitated about doing this online. Well, I spent the money and I spent it with Adorama. It has turned out to be a fantastic choice. During the first week

4 Star Review   By RichT on Adorama - Jun 20, 2010

I already own the F4 version but I wanted the 2.8 for sports (My grand-daughters are always involved in something). The 2.8 is quite heavy compared to the F4 so they will both have their uses. The F4 maybe more often.

Fantastic
5 Star Review   By Mikey on Beach Camera - Aug 6, 2009

Strengths: f2.8, AF, zoom, everything

Weakness: nothing

Not only is this the best lens I've ever owned, buying from Beach Camera made this purchase that much better. I ordered the lens on 8/3/09 and received the lens 8/5/09. Lightning fast delivery. This lens can do it all. AF can track fast moving objects and stick with it. I would recommend this lens over the IS version. The IS makes pictures look a little soft and most of the time with this lens you should be using either a tripod or monopod so the IS becomes a non-factor.

Great lens
5 Star Review   By member mamazon168 - Dec 24, 2007

Strengths: Picture quality, f/2.8, fast auto-focusing

Weakness: Weight, attracts unwanted attention

I bought this for our trip to Asia. My husband and I both used this lens on a 30D and XTi and the resulting image quality was excellent! I had considered getting the IS version however for the steep increase in price ($500) and weight I couldn't justify that purchase, in part because with a lens this heavy I would most of the time be mounting it to a tripod for zoomed shots anyway. My husband also has some gripe about the weight since one part of the trip required a hike of over 5 miles, but after a few shoots it became one of his favorite lens; we even had to take turns on this lens afterwards. One thing we learned on the trip regarding this lens is that it attracts much attention! Just something to consider when you travel to less than friendly environments.

Canon 70-200 2.8L Non IS
5 Star Review   By member Ohmster - Nov 24, 2007

Strengths: Bokeh, Fast Focus, Image Quality, L Glass

Weakness: Weight

This is an awesome lens. It is now my second most used in my set (50/1.8, 60 Macro, 10-22, 24-70L, 70-200L). I do a lot of outdoor stuff so the IS wasn't a must, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd go IS on this lens. My copy was a little soft when I got it, but rather than send it back for an exchange, I took it to a Canon Service Center for calibration. It came back much, much, better.

Strengths: Image Quality Focus speed F2.8

Weakness: Weight White - Attracts attention. Good and bad

Used my brother's and now bought my own. Seeing is believing. Sold my 70-200 F4 and got this beauty. Only 1 stop difference, but oh what a difference. As a side benefit, because it works perfectly w/ my canon 1.4x extender, I have a 98-280 F4 lens at nearly no less in image quality. That is what I call versatility! The only downside is weight. But what it gives makes up the difference!
