Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
3 Star Review  productwiki.com - Mar 16, 2011

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is a low-cost standard lens for SLR and digital SLR cameras. This is not as fast as the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, and uses a linear extension system for focus adjustment driven by a Micromotor. This means that the autofocus is slower, and additional features are missing which might correct distortion at the edges. This is the lightest EF lens at 4.6 oz (130 g), and the f/1.8 aperture is adequate for shooting in many low light conditions. Gaussian optics improve the narrow focus, allowing some natural blending of background elements. A manual focus mode is also available. At 1.6 inches (41 mm) in length, the compact design makes it portable and easier to store. Features Compact design Gaussian optics Focal Length: 50 mm Maximum Aperture: 1:1.8 Lens Construction: 6 elements in 5 groups Diagonal Angle of View: 46 deg Focus Adjustment: Overall linear extension ... PROS: (1) light weight enough to no factor in significantly when handling the camera (2) goes on and comes off quickly and easily (3) Auto-focus is accurate and does the job (4) output is consistent from one picture to the next, always know what it will do (5) can be used reliably for many years as long as it is taken care of ... CONS: (1) casing is fairly weak, need to be sure you dont tap it against anything (2) auto-focus is a little slow compared to other lenses in the same range (3) cheap all plastic build - including the mount (4) no markings whatsoever for focus distance / DOF (5) not the sharpest lens

5 Star Review   By Larry on Adorama - Oct 29, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I originally bought this lens as I heard Canon was going to discontinue the 1:4 and reprice the 1:8 to higher than the 1:4 ( I am sure with better quality as well). The 1:4 and 1:2 were out of my price range and the reviews everywhere on the 1:8 were usually very high. My intentions were to shoot food photography and objects producing an extremely pleasing bokeh. I have not been disappointed in this lens. The tack sharp results and bokeh are phenomenal.

Takes Me Back To My Photography Roots
4 Star Review   By danwdooley on Adorama - Oct 15, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

My first 35mm film SLR came with the "standard lens" of the day, a 50mm f/1.8 lens. There were no zoom lenses then, or at least they weren't common. For several years I have dreamed of getting a 50mm prime but really did not think seriously of it until I went to the full frame format. That makes the 50mm lens truly that in relationship to frame size. The lens is sharp as a tack and has good color contrast and saturation. So what that it is more plastic than metal. It's light weight and the glass is more important to me for what the lens is than the outer housing. Sure, if I paid several hundred dollars for it that would be a different story but the price/value is super high. Street photography, indoor low light and portrait work use.

4 Star Review   By Joe B on Adorama - Jul 24, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

When I purchased my first TTL Canon (Ftb) in 1973 it came with a 50mm lens. I really liked that lens and was glad to see an inexpensive 50mm for my digital. I was somewhat reluctant to purchase it based on several review of it fragile make up. Well, I was at a photo get together when one of the members dropped his 50mm on the cement floor. He picked it up and it worked fine. I ordered one the next day. I have used it for portraits and for general use. I really like it. Photos are sharp with good color and light. AS others have stated the auto focus is a bit squirrely but the overall performance is great.

Very good lens for a great price! Takes great photos! Focus is a little slow at times, but still does the job. It's light weight, so easy to carry around with you. You can't go wrong having this in your kit. You get a lot for your money.
