With the large maximum aperture, excellent background blur is possible even with a fast shutter speed. The aspherical lens element makes the lens compact and corrects spherical aberrations. The image is sharp even at the edges. Lead-free glass is used.

Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens
4 Star Review   Crutchfield.com

Crutchfield has collected 2 user reviews for this product with an average rating of 4.0 out of 5 stars. The most recent reviewer said, "I purchased this from Crutchfield about a month ago and used it with my Canon T2i for a recent trip to the Grand Canyon. With UV and CPL filters attached, I got nice crisp pictures that I was very happy with. The USM auto focus was fast, silent, and produced very consistent results. I also used several other lenses at the Canyon. While the pictures from this lens are not quite as impressive as those from a Canon L lens, they were not far off and for the money, I like this lens. The compact size & light weight made it a pleasure to work with, especially when compared to most of the zooms that I was using. Low light pictures taken at Vegas came out great. With the 1.6 sensor on the T2i this is not a real wide angle lens, but very comfortable to work with (44.8mm). I shot the pictures in RAW format and using Canon's DPP program the photo's looked great even when cropped quite a bit. I found the build quality to be good. This was a step up from some of the kit lenses provided, especially those without the USM. Not just because of the USM. Overall it seems more solid. I'm sure I'll use this lens quite a bit and the purchase from Crutchfield was great as always ! "

Excellent Normal Lens for 1.6x crop DSLR
3 Star Review   By member ixcafe - Mar 24, 2008

Strengths: Lightweight, fast/noiseless USM focus, sharp comparing to zoom lens

Weakness: Not sharp enough especially at f/1.8, has to use f/2.8 or above. Wish it has larger aperture like the Sigma f/1.4.

I bought this lens to go with my Canon 40D (1.6x crop). With 28mm focal length (equivalent to 50mm on full frame sensor), it had been served as my all-purpose lens since day one. Of course, 50mm f/1.4 on 5D are far better combination. And it also can not compare to the critically acclaimed 35mm f/1.4L. But for the money it worth every penny of it. I like its performance under low light, especially when I took long exposure night/indoor photos. Overall, I like what Canon had offered on this lens so far and wish someday I could justify my upgrade to a full frame camera or 35mm f/1.4L.

Good lens, but not great.
4 Star Review   By member wblackledg - May 10, 2006

Strengths: sharp but not too sharp.

Weakness: some vignetting, and could be sharper.

This is a good lens. Its not a great lens, but for $400 it will do nicely. You may not get enough of a wide angle to suit you at 28mm, but you will have to spend more money to get there too. It’s a sharp lens, but not too sharp. Vignetting at the outer corners is slight but noticeable if your looking for it. Its not as sweet as the 50mm 1.4, however it takes a good photo and is worth the money.
