Great washer...when it's not flashing FH!
1 Star Review

Strengths: Great when it works

Weakness: Flashing FH error code randomly and will not complete the cycle

Had a repairman out once after 1 year warranty expired due to FH error code. Cost $200.00 for a repair that didnt fix it completely. It will work great for a while, then randomly error FH then I need to spend 45 minutes to reset it 100 times to complete the cycle. So now I am stuck with this lemon. Heading out to buy a new NON WHIRLPOOL washer!

Whirlpool Duet
3 Star Review

Strengths: I felt I got a good deal and service from our local Lowes. Easy on your back for loading and unloading. Pedestals a must w/o them the duet is to low for verticaly challenged people (tall).

Weakness: The washer shakes the house while spinning. Lowes recommends rubber shock pads ($40.00). The less water seems the clothes don't get as clean and they don't smell as clean as our old top load machine.

Green expensive machines, if you don't get a good deal. Trade off for saving water and energy verses your clothes don't get as clean as with top loading machines. My kids are older their clothes don't get as dirty. If you have young kids I would not buy them.

WARNING...DO NOT BUY!!
1 Star Review   By member pukie747 - Nov 13, 2007

Strengths: Look's pretty

Weakness: Too many too list, poor warranty, very unreliable, expensive to repair, too low to floor, whirlpool customer service does not exist

I purchased a Whirlpool Duet GHW9150P just over 2 years ago and it has been the worst purchase I have ever made. After just 3 months the unit started flashing an error code FH and would not fill up with water. Luckily my 1 year warranty was still in effect and it was repaired. Now I am getting another error code, F11. The washer initially fills up with water and then nothing happens. A service repair man was called and it will now cost me $210.00 for a new mother board that goes into the Computer Control Unit. The serviceman called Whirlpool to confirm part numbers, and Whirlpool admitted to him that they have had ongoing problems with the CCU in these washers but they are not going to do anything about it. This is a BUYER BEWARE...this machine will cost you lots of $$$'s. Check out my youtube video...www.youtube.com/watch?...

Not worth the price
2 Star Review

Strengths: Cleans clothes well; uses very little soap (don't put in too much or use non HE soap or the drum will mold).

Weakness: Ties sheets into a knot; have to leave the door open between loads or it molds;

We have had the repairman out twice - once under warranty and now a control board and door latch assembly to the tune of $550... more than 1/2 the purchase price. I called Whirlpool several months ago and they said the door latch assembly was under warranty - but now say it isn't. Apparently you can't replace the door latch without replacing the control panel... Whirlpool did, however, sell us the parts for 50% off but we have to pay all the labor. The machine is less than 3 years old and I would never buy it again. I had a Whirlpool top loader and it never needed service in the over 15 years I owned it. I sold it with the house so it could still be running fine. The repairman says the Duet is the best front loader on the market, which is a sad commentary on the quality of front loaders. I would love the machine if it didn't break down so often, but I expect a lot more out of a Whirlpool.

things that make you go hmmmm?
3 Star Review

Strengths: money saver money saver money saver! love that about it.

Weakness: i have large items that i put in the washer and it says that i can do this. they are pure white as well. however, they DO NOT get all the way clean. i even use the bleach when i wash.

my washer DOES get a musty smell. it DOESN'T get my whites white(that drives me crazy). so if you want to purchase this washer i suggest that you DON'T stuff it as full as they say you should and don't forget to leave the door open after you are done washing. i am getting a new washer tomorrow though. top loader-same capacity-energy saver-water saver with agitator! can't wait.

I HATE THIS WASHER AND AM REPLACING IT EVEN AFTER IT'S HUGH COST
1 Star Review

Strengths: Nice looking.

Weakness: Doesn't clean well. Dispenses bleach and softner as soon as the door is shut and before washer even starts.

I have owned many washers and many brands. None this expensive and none this bad! We only purchased it about a year ago, and even with the large cost, we are looking to replace it. It requires high effiency detergent which is more expensive and hard to find, so you don't save any money. Since it often dispenses softner as soon as you shut the door, it washes it out. It does not remove hard spots even with spray prewashes. I will never buy another machine like this one and maybe not a Whirlpool

Duet HT GHW9400PT Washer (Front Loading 3.8 Cu. Ft., Energy Star).
5 Star Review   By member SaidaD - Oct 17, 2006

Strengths: This washer is great. I can wash the bed linens from multiple rooms in one load, not to mention a whole weeks worth of towels! I wash larger loads using less power. Very convenient with the pedestal.

Weakness: The only weakness I have found is the pricey price tag. Hopefully, it will save me enough over the next 5 years+ to make the investment worthwhile.

Exceptional performance. This washer makes doing laundry very convenient. With the pedestals, it takes a load off of my back. I love that it's designed to be ergonomically "correct". I came across this washer last year while helping out a friend with one of these machines and I loved it so much that I saved up for a year to purchase my own! It also got great reviews in Consumer Reports (who's opinion I trust).

Not Happy with this Washer at All!!!!
1 Star Review   By member nrgswb - Sep 15, 2006

Strengths: Can Stack Super Capacity Washer

Weakness: Clothes Aren't Clean; Musty Smell if You Leave Clothes in for Short Times

I am completely disappointed with this machine. Since I bought it I have had to throw away more clothes because they didn't come clean but went into the dryer and therefore stains were sealed in. Don't buy this if you have kids: I just washed clothes and it did not get chocolate milk out of my son's white uniform shirt. You must pretreat everything if you want your clothes reasonably clean!! (Kinda cuts down on all of that reported time saved to be squirting Spray and Wash on every item.....) If you leave the clothes in for a few hours you may have to wash them again to get the mildew smell out. Open the door immediately after the load is done! But, FYI, that doesn't guarantee that they won't smell. I wind up putting two fabric sheets in to mask the smell. My laundry room stinks. Oh, and it vibrates so badly that my kids get scared and the dogs bark. No kidding! Also, the short drying time is BS. If the dryer "senses" that your clothes aren't dry it will keep drying. I have awoken in the middle of the night hearing the beep beep that lets you know the dryer is still on. I then have nightmares about little tiny blue jeans that are now fit for a tot. Bottom Line: I wouldn't buy it again. FYI: I have read similar reviews on other sites.

2 Star Review

Strengths: huge

Weakness: must be on a concrete floor

I bought my Whirlpoos Duet HT washer with matching dryer almost four years ago. Since day 1 the washer has sounded and felt like a jet engine when it is on its final spin. We immediately called repairmen who blamed it on the floor (this was a new log home). I've since read that this machine will always act this way when placed on any floor other than a concrete slab. Who wouldda known?

My First problem
3 Star Review   By member wordcruiser - May 7, 2006

Strengths: The clothes come out looking "ironed' if the wrinkle shield is used. The clothes seem to come very clean. Easier to load than top loading, especially the dryer is easier to load.

Weakness: Tonight the door is locked, the timer says .01, it is still on wash cycle. 9 hours later, back from work, it reads the same. My clothes are locked in! Bought Jan. 26/06 The manual says turn to drain

The cost is very high but likely worth the cost of water saving if you have to purchase your water. The dryer is huge! If I can get the obstacle of the locked door figured out and if it doesn't happen on a regular basis I would purchase the unit again. But it would be most inconvenient if you were on your way to a wedding/funeral etc. and your clothes were locked up!

Duet HT GHW9400PT Washer
5 Star Review   By member blai_1079990373 - Mar 14, 2006

Strengths: Quiet, energy saver and large loads.

Weakness: Expensive. Controls are in the front, which is not kids friendly.

Highly recommended. Has been really pleased with the results. It uses less detergent and water. My only concern in the long run is the liability of the electronics. I purchased the extended warranty just in case.

More than 40 loads later....
5 Star Review   By member fizzfever - Jan 17, 2006

Strengths: large capacity, multiple choices of how to wash a load, minimal water usage, removes most of the water from the clothes.

Weakness: just the cost

After not having a clothes washer for over a month we purchased the duet washer. So I did alot of laundry in a short amount of time. I had read some of the 'problems' folks had experienced and knew what to expect if they happened. And I will address those later. However the overwhelming majority of folks loved the machine and the ones that didn't, hated it within a few weeks. The only real draw back that I saw was the price. I am a real frugal person and I think that the extra cost is justified. This washer will save me future costs incurred with doing laundry. The major costs of laundry are water, heating the water, soap, wear and tear of the clothes when washing the clothes, and the electicity expense of drying the clothes. WATER If you have to pay for water this will use much less water than top loaders. Since it uses less water, less water is heated. Saving water costs and the gas/electricity cost to heat the water. SOAP Though the washer uses the special HE soap that is more expensive, you don't have to use a whole lot of it and I thought the extra expense was minimal. I have heard that regular soap is OK to use as long as you don't use much since it suds up more than the HE soap. My kids get their clothes real dirty so I have been buying the HE soap. WEAR AND TEAR OF CLOTHES Since this washer tumbles clothes there is not alot of friction against the washer in the tub. What I mean is that in a top loader I would sometimes get clothes stuck around the agitator post, clothes would be twisted, and just srubbing away against the other clothes in the washer. My clothes would get rips from just washing them. In this washer the clothes are tumbled gently creating less friction against the machine and other clothes. You can actually see how the clothes are washed. DRYING THE CLOTHES You may ask how does a washer help in the expense of drying clothes? This machine spins so fast and partially drys the clothes reducing the drying time in the dryer. Another savings. OTHER CONCERNS Other people have voiced concerns over the washer gaining a moldy smell, water being in the detergent compartment, and one complaint about bleach being retained and ruining clothes. I washed clothes every day and never experienced ta moldy smell and I left the door shut all the time. However if I only did laundry once a week I will leave the door open all night for one night and then shut it the next morning. This washer creates a water tight seal when shut so it needs to dry when not used for a couple of days. Another person complained that water was in the detergent dispenser. If you read the manual it states that the dispenser is rinsed after every load to keep it clean and remove any trace of detergent, softener, or bleach. I love this feature. Yes there is residual water in the dispenser that will slightly dilute your water softener or detergent, hoever it will be diluted in the wash anyway. I did several bleach loads and never experienced any bleach spots on any clothes. You do have to make sure that the bleach goes into the bleach dispenser not the detergent dispenser. The detergent dispenser immediately begins to dispense the detergent slowly into the tub. THE CONTROLS At first glance it looks like the controls to a spaceship but upon using the controls a few times it makes perfect sense. Every load can be adjusted to determine a custom length of wash time, extra rinses, temperature, or to add a garment after the door has been locked. Of course most loads of laundry will not need tweaking and the standard normal wash will suffice. One nice feature is the whitest/whites load where bleach is used, the washer will run extra rinse time to make sure any residual bleach is removed from the clothes. Great when you are doing a load of white tshirts and dirty socks. The best part is knowing to the minute how long the load will take, since there is a digital display of the length of the load. CAPACITY This washer is large, in fact extra large since there is no agitator in the middle of the tub. I bought 5 yards of denim and washed it all with room to spare. That denim was 15x6 feet in size. Next I will be washing large comforters and sleeping bags. Something I could never accomplish with a traditional top loading washer. INSTALLATION My 11 year old daughter installed the washer under my supervision. All the installation except leveling the machine. She got frustrated doing that. However be sure to take the extra time to get the machine level, else it may not wash correctly or spin the clothes as dry as possible. My sister experience this problem, but it was corrected when the washer was leveled. Is a frugal Mom of six kids happy with her purchase of an expensive front loading washer? Yes, this machine will save me time today while doing laundry and may actually be cost effective when compared to doing laundry with a top loader and the extra expenses of water and electricity.

Whirlpool Duet front load washing machine
1 Star Review   By member nanjvp5 - Oct 30, 2005

Strengths: large loads

Weakness: can only use 1/3 cup of bleach. White do not get clean

I purchased a Whirlpool Duet front load washing machine in June of this year and it ruined 500.00 worth of clothes. I did a load of whites with 1/3 cup of bleach. When that was done I put in a load of dark clothes. I opened the detergent drawer to add the detergent and to my horror the bleach was still in the dispenser. It never dispensed. When I opened the door of the washer to take out the clothes I saw the bleach running down the inside rubber seal. This was before I even started the washer. I called Whirlpool and they sent out a repairman who told me he didn't know anything about Whirlpool. He also told me he would not buy a Whirlpool, which I don't agree with him because all my appliances are Whirlpool. I called Whirlpool and told Mary what he said and she said she would send someone else out. That was over a month ago and still no word. She also told me that the bleach should not have run out like that. Could someone who has this washer tell me if they open the drawer and add fabric softener or beach and close the drawer does it run down the inside rubber seal BEFORE you start the washer? Thanks, sunpeep@msn.com

Duet HT GHW9150PW Washer
5 Star Review   By member rstraughter - Aug 15, 2005

Strengths: Washer is whisper quiet and cleans clothes very well. Good solid washer

Weakness: Does not have different load size options. There is only one load setting (large). If you wish to wash medium loads, make sure the "less water" option is selected

I would recommend this washer. I have been very pleased with the cleanliness of the clothes once they have been cleaned. No more stubborn stains or that unfresh smell that you get from other washers. The spin cycle is very efficient and little drying is required. Gentle cycle works very well for delicates. You will also use less detergent which will save you money!

5 Star Review   By member jerrycarlo1 - May 10, 2005

Strengths: It sounds silly but we never would have imagined clothes could come out that clean especially after watching the machine go thru it's wash cycle.

Weakness: The wash cycle is not fast but it is worth the wait. The pedestal did not come with it, we would suggest that option.

We could not be more pleased with our Whirlpool Duet washer, it all the things you would expect from German engineering. Ten years ago we purchased the top of the line Maytag washer and from the very beginning we were not pleased with the way it washed and we just put up with it for all those years, what a mistake on our part. Regarding the Whirlpool Duel, our only concern was ordering it on line but again the experience with "ShopSunshine" was very painless and their delivery system "Manna" was on time and professional. Over all rating 10+.
