Weakness: It smells musty and doesnt' clean very well.

Our has started smelling musty the last few months and we've had it for about 3 years. I'm looking into how to fix the problem, but the only solution seems to be purchase a different machine. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Whirlpool duet front loader
1 Star Review

Weakness: I have had the same mildew stinky odor from the very beginning which is 2 years ago.

I had phoned the company in the beginning about the odor. They sent a repairman out which didn't cost me anything since it was in the first year. He replaced the large grey inside rubber thing which did nothing. They also told me about wiping it down after each load, leaving the door open after usage, use less soap, and running it on heavy load with all bleach and no clothes twice monthly. Which only helps the smell until you do another load. Why should you have to do all of these things on a $1000 machine??????? I like the machine all except the nasty smell you have constantly!

Would never buy another front loader whirlpool washer
1 Star Review

Strengths: looks nice

Weakness: stinky mildew smell in clothes even after they are dry, bleach spots show up in my regular loads when bleach is NOT used, does not clean clothes well at all!

I would not recommend this whirlpool washer to anyone. I am not happy with the way it washes my clothes, and I have had this machine for six months. I just had the repair man put a new part in it because it wasn't spinning out my clothes properly. My clothes have just started to stink when they come out of the machine for about the last two months. I have tried tide and all top name brand HE detergents, and it doesn't make any difference. When I replace this machine i will DEFINITELY be buying a top loading washer with enough water in it to actually clean the clothes!

Mildew Nightmare
1 Star Review

Weakness: We stink like mildew

This washer has a poor design. Mildew forms in the reservoir under the druma and the drain pipes in and outside of the machine. Our clothes stink!!! I hade to take the machine apart to clean out the drain pipes. Reading the other reviews, it looks like this is a lemon and I think I am going to file a class action suit.

Stay Away From the Duet Washer
1 Star Review   By member Jeffdcrockett - Mar 12, 2006

Strengths: Looks Good

Weakness: Doesn't Work

Clothes do not get as clean as a top loader, thats right, even if you use the HE soap. If you put as many items in the washer as advertised is possible, they come out all twisted and intertwined. Then when you throw them in the Duet dryer they come out all twisted, intertwined and wrinkled beyond belief. Bottom line, you can't wash as big a load as they say you should be able to. After a few months you will notice that the washer smells musty like mildew making you leave the door open when not in use to dry out the insides. Not a big deal, but you shouldn't have to do this with such an expensive, high-tech, washer. And finally, the thing that has really got me hacked off is that in the 2 years we've had this washer, it has leaked copious amounts of water on our carpeted wash room floor at least 4 times. All you can do is sit there and watch the water gush out. Called the repairman and for $100 service charge, he'll tell you he can not duplicate the problem and therefore, can't fix it. Whirlpool sent out a voucher to replace the carpet. Are we the only ones having this problem? They've got to know about it and have some sort of fix. They ought to inform owners and voluntarily fix it. It has to be some sort of problem with the electronic controls or sensors in the machine. This machine has been a waste of money and will continue to be so until they get it perfected/improved.

1 Star Review   By member mrabbit - Oct 8, 2005

Strengths: It looks pretty. It has great cycles.

Weakness: Mildews, clothes stink, expensive, expensive HEdetergent, after 1 1/2 years it leaks. Bad Customer Service

Seems like a great machine but it's high maintenance, doesn't clean clothes well after a couple months of use. I was considering buying 2 washers and 2 dryers for our family of 7, until I saw the commercials for these wonderful washers. It was just what I needed! Large Loads Saves water Saves electricity It has great cycles: whitest whites normal casual delicate handwash drain and spin (which I have been using a lot lately since it doesn't always spin the clothes dry) rinse and spin soak cycle (wouldn't want to soak my clothes in there for too long since the washer stinks) It has a great safety lock feature~~children can't crawl in and get stuck. Only problem with that is, it can't be used because when I called about the mildew problem, I was told to leave the door open. That defeats the purpose of having the safety lock. On paper and on the commercials this was a fantastic washing machine. It holds more, uses less water, saves on electricity. It spins it really dry so that it takes less drying time. All that would be great if I wouldn't have to wash or drain and spin my clothes more than once. This machine doesn't save me any time or money, instead it costs more of both. I emailed about the mildew and the awful smell after I had it for only a couple of weeks. The awful smell didn't come until about a month later. The reply that I received is to wipe down the gasket with a mixture of bleach and water, run a bleach only cycle through the machine and leave the door open. They didn't mention that I'm supposed to shove my hand under the door gasket and pull out any socks that may have gone underneath there. My son discovered 6 socks in there. Oh, now that we know that can happen we'll be sure to add that to the checklist everytime we do a load. Another problem with this machine is when you press the button and the door unlocks to add clothes, water runs down the door onto the floor when opened. It seems a lot of us bought lemons since I do see a good review now and then. After 1 1/2 years my machine now leaks. My husband and I are considering throwing it away and and going with the original plan of 2 top load washing machines. $1,000 down the drain.

Strengths: None at all

Weakness: Everything

It is supposed to be better than all other washers, but we have yet to see any energy or water savings compared to the former washer that we owned for 12 years. It was supposed to clean better, but it doesn’t. We called the technician three times in the first 8 months of ownership, because somehow the bleach was staying in the system and slowly came out during other washes ruining color and delicate clothing. Our whites are now bone white. We were told that the problem was the detergent, so we invested in the more expensive HE (High Efficiency) without receiving improvements. If you want your clothes clean, you need to scrub them before placing them in the washer…not much of a saving. We are ready to get rid of it. If we can’t trade it in, we will donate this piece of trash. I would not own another one, not even if it is given to me for free.

Strengths: Front load--less abuse on clothing. Looks great. Huge capacity.

I cannot say enough good about my duet washer and dryer. I have had them 2 years with no problems whatsoever. I have the sanitary cycle which is great for washing rags to make sure they are really clean. Sounds like the other reviewer just had a defective washer. We are moving soon and I hate to leave them behind so we will be buying the exact same models for the new house!

1 Star Review   By member washerwoman54 - Jan 27, 2005

Strengths: There aren't any.

Weakness: Too many that matter. It's not worth the money.

I have used this machine for six months and do not recommend it. The clothes do not always wring out properly. Frequently they are so wet that I can wring water out of them with my hands and I have to run it through the spin cycle again. If I wash jeans or sheets, they are so twisted around one another that it takes awhile to get the knots out of the mess. When washing cotton sweaters in the delicate cycle, the constant rotation causes pilling. I never had that problem with my old top loading machine delicate cycle. There is no button to indicate a small load. If I do wash a few rags or a rug, the machine is off balance and after 3 tries to balance itself, the machine shuts down. When I complained about the poor results of the spin cycle, the manufacturer said it was because I wasn't using detergent specifically made for HE machines even though ALL detergent says on its box that it can be used in HE machines. I changed to TIDE HE. No difference. Customer service at the manufacturer told me to cut down on the soap, but then my whites didn't get clean and the clothes still did not wring out properly. They told me to put less clothes in. Didn't help. Manufacturer said to sort the clothes, putting only jeans with jeans, towels with towels, etc. For a machine that costs a thousand dollars, I don't expect to have to sort all my clothes and wait until I have enough shirts to only wash shirts or only wash pants. It is obvious that this machine is not reliable enough for all customers. I've had an authorized Whirlpool repair man out to look at it. He can't figure out the problem. The energy I save on is used up when I have to run the cycle twice to wring out the clothes. Long cycles (for white clothes, it's over an hour) make for a long day if you have several loads to do. The severe twisting and knotting of the clothes makes them wear out faster. Bras with wires get bent and broken. Don't leave anything in a kid's pocket. Unlike a top loader where the item will just fall to the bottom of your machine, it will fall into the opening in the side of the washer drum and cause a malfunction. Small items like socks get caught in the drum. (Don’t use this machine with baby clothes.) You have to leave the washer door open after each use to dry out the drum or it molds. Not to mention the odor. Undissolved powered detergent falls out of the soap dispenser with the first rush of water onto your clothes. Because of the low amount of water that is used, it isn't washed away immediately and can cause soap burns on your clothing. Because of this you can't use powdered bleach. If you still decide to buy this machine, I recommend only liquid soap.
