Everything about this grill is heavy duty and built to last. From the solid rubber wheels to the thick cast grill plates. Very easy to maintain a variety of temperatures from smoking to sear-grilling. Simply an exceptional grill that serves multiple cooking styles.

This is a wonderful grill. I purchased one 16 years ago and used it for 10 years. I was not able to find a comparable grill to replace it until now. So thrill that CharBroil brought this product back. ps My husband is thrilled also !!!!!!

Disappointed
1 Star Review   By wayne on Home Depot - May 19, 2013

Solid box but that's about it.Half inch between top and bottom where the hinge is welded to box.Air vents are hard to adjust when hot.End plates on top leaks smoke all the way around.Top of box is made of three pieces.Door on front leaks.Uses a ton of charcoal to cook a butt, ribs or anything taking three hours or more.I guess this is what I get buying something without seeing it first.Should have spent my money somewhere else.

Can I put 10 stars on this product??
5 Star Review   By Grillfan on Home Depot - May 11, 2013

I thought W.C. Bradley had quit making this grill. I got one in 1989 and used it for 15+ years but I kept it outside and it finally rusted. Had I taken care of it and kept it under a roof it would still be here today. I am so happy I found out they still make it and have improved on it over the years. In the years since mine rust out I have owned three gas grills--two rusted out and one cheap one I still have. I have a nice Texas Pitcrafters side box smoker. NONE of these grills and smokers are better for what I do than the 940 X. I used to smoke on it and grill on it. I love that I can move the coals up and down and can access them without raising the lid. When I am smoking/bar b queing on the 940 I keep a separate fire and add coals through the front. I just got my new one. I LOVE IT. There are several things that are better than the one I had in 1989. The wheels are better. The wood shelves with the pans to hold them are better. I like the rod charcoal holder better than my old cast ones. Cast is what I want for the grill but cast iron is not the best for actually building the fire on--they tend to rust out since the fire burns any seasoning off. The cast sides and grill are great. You really need to have a helper when assembling. It is not hard but putting the lid on requires one person to hold the lid while another puts the screws on. Me and my daughter did it in about 45 minutes taking our time. It is a fine grill and smoker. I don't know why THD does not stock these in their store. For the money they are the best value there is in charcoal grills. None I know of will last longer and none are better designed.

CB940X CHARCOAL GRILL
3 Star Review   By Jimmy on Home Depot - May 1, 2013

Pros: Overall good quality. Nice thick gauge steel for the body, rubber casters and superb cast iron grates. Cons: Design leaves quarter inch gap between near backside of grill cover and the body(picture attached). Therefore is unable to hold high temperature without constantly replenishing coals. Definitely needs two people to assemble.

Solid Reputation & Solid Grill
4 Star Review   By Maestro on Home Depot - Apr 5, 2013

I had wanted to get into charcoal grilling/smoking and my research led me to the CB 940x. I haven't had time to fire it up yet but when I do I will (hopefully) be able to update my review. As others have said, it's heavy (in a good way). Solid frame, box, and lid. I don't suspect this will warp or "fall apart" like the thinner charcoal grills. The grates are nice. Definitely need to season them (I learned the hard way: don't do it in an oven; too much smoke. Use the grill and wipe off excess seasoning before heating; just use a thin coat). Fairly easy to assemble - you can get away with doing it alone but I recommend a helper when putting the lid on. The other steps are easily done with one person. I have a few gripes with the packaging. Mine came straight from the CB warehouse (as I suspect all do). The way in which Char Broil packages these grills for shipment leaves a lot to be desired. This is almost a 200# package, and contains mostly metal parts. The basket and other metal parts were not wrapped or protected much so as the box gets moved around during shipping all the metal parts bang against the box, the lid, the shelf, etc. and scratch the heck out of the paint. I had to send the first one back because of excessive chipping and scratches, especially on the top of the lid (fear of premature rusting). That likely occurred during shipping. The 2nd one arrived in much better shape. However, it too was noticably scratched, but mostly on the inside or in places that to me won't seem to cause premature corrosion (but who knows). I was missing the two caster socket inserts, but CB shipped them quckly with no questions asked. Finally, one of the wooden shelves was dented up pretty good. Speaking of the side shelves...all the pictures I saw online led me to believe the shelves were made from a better wood than yellow pine. (Yellow pine is not a good choice for carving/serving boards) I guess i was expecting something better. When I asked CB about this they said they ship bambo boards mostly, but it can vary; but their specifications for the CB 940x do call for hardwood. Well, these are not hardwood. I didn't press it further. So, I'll give it the summer, see how they do, and think about replacing them with something more appropriate. Ultimately these are minor quibbles once the grill is fired up. If you read other reviews, people have had these grills last decades. I hope mine does the same.

High Quality, versatile bbq pit
5 Star Review   By Scottm on Home Depot - Apr 3, 2013

We owned one of these years ago. After many years of use it had to be retired. We then bought an offset smoker/grill to replace but it never was easy to control temperature, etc. with the offset and we never liked it as well as the old Char-broil. The Char-Broil is very heavy duty & durable. Temperature control is very good. The adjustable charcoal grates can be raised & lowered which is a big help. The set up is a little bit of a hassle but be sure to follow the instructions concerning the seasoning of the cast iron cooking grates and keep the ash tray cleaned after each use: this will help prevent rusting (applies to any pit). This is a grill and NOT a smoker although indirect cooking is easy with this pit. I would recommend this grill. It can put out some great grub!

This is the charcoal grill of my dreams!
5 Star Review   By BBQ57 on Home Depot - Mar 28, 2013

I previously owned the Char-Broil Santa Fe model, which I considered to be the best that I've owned. I used it for years until the bottom wore through. When I learned about the CB940X model, which is much stronger & sturdier, I was thrilled & had to have it. No other grill has cooked to my satisfaction than the Char-Broil brand. I've owned a propane grill, a Weber, & a Brinkmann propane/charcoal combo, but none compared to Char-Broil. I love the sturdy cast-iron grating, the very sturdy ash-catch tray, the fact that the coals can be lifted up or down, but I especially love the front door that allows you to add more charcoal during cooking. If you like the taste of charcoal-cooked barbecue, you would absolutely be happy with the CB940X.

This is one of two of my favorite grills.
5 Star Review   By TeeBag on Home Depot - Mar 27, 2013

I had my first CB940X for approximately twenty years and was very happy to see that Charbroil was finally offering it again. This new model has several improvements from the old one such as cast iron wheels, hood vents and much better side tables. It is easy to assemble and I can't wait to use it!

This classic product has been on the market for over 50 years. Our previous version of this Char-Broil product lasted over 20 years and still functions today. We are currently assembling this grill. Very well made product. A picture of this product is above.

I'm glad I chose this model
5 Star Review   By JPat on Home Depot - Jan 30, 2013

At nearly 190 pounds, this large barbeque is made from fairly heavy steel and some cast iron components. Additionally, it features a set of pre-seasoned cast iron cooking grates. It was easy to assemble, and appears to be a well designed barbeque, which should last for many years.

Great grill, assembly required
5 Star Review   By AW2008 on Home Depot - Jan 22, 2013

Very happy with our new grill but assembly was difficult to say the least. There were a few injuries and we did not have a dolly to move the beast ( about 180lbs) to the back yard. That being said, once it was completed, it has been a great grill, sturdy materials and the necessary features are all there, except a few hooks for supplies.
