Mounting Screws to cabinet
3 Star Review   By VeryHandy on Home Depot - Apr 20, 2013

Screws to mount to underside of upper cabinet have notch at end that allows screw to cut new threads in nut. A better design would be no threads on lowest 3/8" of bolt (like door knob screws and deadbolt screws). Removing upper grill revealed short sheet metal screw that seemed to interfere with path of of left cabinet screw. Removed screw and we able to finish, replaced screw. Stubby #1 Phillips would have been handy or ¼” socket set with #1 driver bit in ¼” hex socket. I can't recommend with notched cabinet screws!

GOOD PRODUCT
5 Star Review   By NotMyFullName on Home Depot - Mar 10, 2013

I buy these for homes I rehab and one last year for my Mom. I'm surprised by the negative reviews. I've had good results, no complaints about durability, and my Mom has been very happy with hers. Installation is easy for a do-it-your-selfer. One suggestion: I buy two metal mending plates with holes and place them between the cabinet and the bolts that go into the unit. They sell these in the lumber dept. This gives a very solid surface for the bolts so they do not stress the cabinet, which is often made with particle board. This also allows you to make the holes a little larger for easier alignment. The wall brace is very easy to install compared to other brands. Its u-shaped and does not cover the entire back space. Center it in the opening and away you go. I have gotten to the point where I don't even use the wall template, just the cabinet one for the three holes you need to cut. Also, place a moving blanket on your range so you don't scratch the stove, and a sheet over the micro so the particles from drilling don't get in the unit. This gives you a easy place to sit the micro rather than moving the range. I installed one last night in under two hours, including clean-up and removal of the old unit. Figure an extra hour if it's your first one and an hour or so if you need to place an outlet in the top cabinet. Many times vent hoods are hard wired without an outlet.

2 Star Review   By BBdad on Home Depot - Feb 9, 2013

Purchased in store on "Black Friday 2012" so far so good but I wouldn't buy it at the regular selling price. This is your basic popcorn making, water boiling, frozen dinner cooking, left over reheating OTR microwave. It does a good job at these tasks I just don't expect it to do so for that long a time. Mysteriously stoped working one day. Next morning everything is fine, keeping it for now. Don't expect this unit to last more that two or three years max. When it quits I won't be replacing it with another Magic Chef.

very extremely loud fan when cooking. shuts down very easy if cooking on back burners at same time.Dont boil water when using on back burners. steam has shut it down. very flimsy construction. sounds like tin when closing. value on sale was awesome extreme cheap . would never pay full price for this one... tip = if unit overheats you must unplug for several minutes to reset. It may not be blown and may stil work.

microwave works fine, but the noise is intolerable
1 Star Review   By tuffguppy on Home Depot - Jan 10, 2013

This microwave came installed in a home I just bought. I will soon replace it. The manual I printed up online states that the vent fan can be turned off wilth three presses of the button on the control panel. It cannot be turned off on my unit and the noise it makes is horrible. I have an ** in my other house and it operates very quietly, even with the fan on. I'm buying one of those to replace this one. I'm going to sell this one really cheap to someone. It's almost new. They're going to hate it. I'll tell them about the issues I have with it, but for $25 I'm sure someone will buy it.

Almost perfect
4 Star Review   By fastcook on Home Depot - Jan 2, 2013

I've always wanted a microwave over my stove top in my current home. I've had one in a previous home but I never purchased one for here. On Black Friday they had this at a really great price and I found one left at my store. It works great and comes on automatically if I foget to turn it on which my old blower certainly didn't! Only think I miss is the ability to press 1 thru six and have this shortcut run the microwave for that number of minutes. This one doesn't do that!

Do not buy this
1 Star Review   By autobroker on Home Depot - Dec 18, 2012

We purchased two of these for our rental homes. One was white and the other stainless. This is the review for the white one - note that both units are no longer working. The Magic Chef microwave oven has been a huge disappointment. The white one died after a little over a year. The panel would not respond to any commands. We checked the power to the unit and it was fine. We checked the fan, light and control panel - all dead. I would consider this a fluke and give the benefit of doubt to the company, however when the second unit also died, I became suspicious. After reading these reviews, I have to agree with the others - this is a defective product. My recommendation is to spend a little more and get a better unit. The time it takes to install the unit is a good day's work. The cabinet above needs to be cut and 3 holds drilled. Vent ducts need to be modified and the bracket needs to be installed on the back wall. If this were a universal installation, I wouldn't mind. I could easily install a new one. The new microwave requires new cutouts, holes and a new bracket.

Spend a little more money
2 Star Review   By Clint on Home Depot - Dec 8, 2012

Less than 3 years of service before it finally quit. Always had issues with it right out of the box with internal power failures not related to 110 outlet power supply. Spend a little more money and get something better.

Lasted 3 Years
3 Star Review   By Homebrew on Home Depot - Nov 26, 2012

I would recommend spending a little more money and purchasing a little higher quality unit. I guess we are one of the lucky ones. We purchased this model at Home Depot in Nov 2009, and after Sale Price and Manuf Rebate cost only $43 and the install went smoothly. We used it a lot (1-4 times a day) for exactly 3 years without any issues (other than being a little loud), and then it died (no power at all). The question is whether to buy the same model for easy install (just pop it in place w/ existing mounting bracket), or get something else and start over w/ a different mounting bracket, holes, etc.

Died after just minutes of use
1 Star Review   By Kristee75 on Home Depot - Oct 2, 2012

Purchased this unit and heated up some Velveeta for cheese dip. Usually takes about 4 minutes after pausing to stir a couple times. After 10 minutes and repeated stirrings it was still lumpy and not completely melted. Then my son heated up popcorn for 5 minutes and only one kernel in the bag popped. Also this microwave is the loudest one I have ever heard. You could hear it very clearly two rooms away! Returning this item to the store. Thankfully I still have the receipt.

Junk!!!Dont buy this unit!!!
1 Star Review   By Adam on Home Depot - Aug 23, 2012

Tried to save money and not buy a big name brand unit...What a huge mistake. Since day one we have had problems with this microwave. Buttons dont work, turntable sometimes doesn't turn, and now the thing turns on by itself. Thankfully I was standing in the kitchen when it started cooking the tupperware full of cookies for no reason. Pressed clear, and it did it again. Finally had to unplug it. Do Not Buy!!!

Worked fine for a little over a yr, then warranty ended and so did the circuit board
2 Star Review   By BubbaGump on Home Depot - Aug 18, 2012

It is a good unit and everything worked fine until one day the inside light and turn table stopped working. I decided to tear it apart and rewired the turn table to work with the light button but we used the underside light quite a bit so I switched it back. I traced the issue back to a part on the circuit board and can you get them anywhere - NO! All I need is like a $2 part and it would work fine again but a new board is over half the cost of the unit. Pretty frustrating when you know what the issue is but can't get parts in our throw away society - grrr... I'll look for a better quality unit next time.

RIP OFF
1 Star Review   By duckhunterswife on Home Depot - Aug 10, 2012

Yet again kudos to the made over seas market. They have successfully made yet again another piece of junk. I bought this on Nov 23,2011 and today is August 10,2012 Less than 9 months and its dead. Seems one of the fans burned out. Fortunately, we bought the 2 year warrenty on it. My suggestion is if you buy this piece of junk, buy the extended warrenty cuz you will need it.

Overall a nice basic built in microwave
4 Star Review   By Spyderman01 on Home Depot - Aug 10, 2012

I picked this up on sale to install where there was previously only a range hood. The instructions were a little confusing as those on the template didn't exactly match the booklet, but was finally able to get it installed. The microwave itself is a nice basic model and works well. My only complaint is the venting mechanism blows upwards more than outwards so I'm worried about the cabinet facing long term.

loud but does it's job for the price
4 Star Review   By stayathomemomof2 on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2012

The fan on low is loud. On high really loud. If you don't use the high setting on the fan mode then all is good. You get use to the noise. Microwave uses the high setting mode of fan when in use which makes it really loud in the middle of the night to use. Overall good for the price if you can get over the noise level. Tons of space on the inside.

Lasted a total of 5.5 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!
1 Star Review   By PeevedDad on Home Depot - May 29, 2012

Bought this on May 16th and Installed it on the 21st. Took a little longer to install but not that bad about 2 hours. Son used it to heat mac and cheese on the 22nd. Wife wanted popcorn on the 23rd, hit popcorn preset and it only ran 1 min and 30 secs then everything went totally dead. I checked everything but nothing, plus popcorn was half done and as hard as a rock. Machine must of gotten hot and after 6 or 7 minutes it came back on like nothing happened. Tried it again and this time it only ran for about a minute and it shut down again this time plate on the inside was so hot it couldn't be touched. Took it out and returned it to Home depot, they were great. Don't understand how this machine passed any type of quality control. They told me Whirlpool makes it, if they make this kind of garbage it will be a while before i buy one of their products. By the way Magic chef owes me $40.00 for my time installing microwave and it's return. I would really like to see if they would send me a check just for my time. Thanks home depot for your great customer service.

Dead after 1.5 yrs
1 Star Review   By Kristin on Home Depot - May 25, 2012

We got this for christmas and installed a few months later, rarely used it for the first year then daily for the last 6 months or so, 2-3 min at a time and now it's just dead and it died while not even in use, it has an annoying feature where the vent turns on by itself when it senses steam and you can't turn that off, well that was on and the light and it died. So angry.

GOT MY MONEY'S WORTH
3 Star Review   By h82stop on Home Depot - Apr 14, 2012

I have not had a problem with this oven. For all of you that are giving this product a rating below 3 stars you have to keep in mind what kind of price you're paying for it. I truly believe that you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a product that's going to out live you then you need to pony up some more money. Even then that's not a guarantee. Mine just went out 3 years later. I use it a lot and for the price I feel I got my money's worth. I am going to replace it with the same model.

1 Star Review   By rhugg on Home Depot - Apr 3, 2012

I have had two of this model, first made it 13 months (warranty is 12) the second made it 11 months and took two months to get fixed. It failed again about 12 months later. They are very good at designing it to last 12 months! I paid about $50 each so I have $100 for 3 years of microwave service. If you can afford better pay the $, Reinstalling etc costs time and $.

Stopped after 3 years
1 Star Review   By jbhf on Home Depot - Mar 27, 2012

This was a great product until it stopped working after three years and the hassel you have to go through to get the part isn't worth the warrenty which doesn't cover labor or for someone to tell you what is wrong with it. Just save you money for a better one.

Love it!
5 Star Review   By BeckyG on Home Depot - Mar 24, 2012

I installed this just over a year ago. It works great! I have not had any problems with it. It looks great above my stove, The light inside is great! Its very bright, not dim like the one I previously had. Its a good size. I can fit large bowls and casserole dishes in it. Large plates fit well also for warming plates that have gotten cold. I really do love this unit and very well worth the money.

This didnt fit under cabinets
3 Star Review   By DiamondMike6 on Home Depot - Mar 7, 2012

Everything was great until the final 2 screws. It didn't fit under the cabinets! I have standard cabinets and the final 2 screws had to go at severe angles to fit. It broke one of the screw holds on the microwave. Measure 2x exactly because it really caused a headache. Microwave is ok tho. A bit loud but works good.

Terrible quality
1 Star Review   By hill on Home Depot - Mar 7, 2012

Completely stopped working after 13 months, which is of course beyond any warranty. If you do purchase this microwave, plan on doing it again in about a year. My neighbors had the same one and it died after a month.

Only lasted a year and a half!
1 Star Review   By stellarview on Home Depot - Feb 25, 2012

My only complaint is it just quit working after 15 months! Barely over a year old, and it just died. Over the range machines like this are supposed to last much longer than the counter top ones. No wonder this thing is so cheap! Buy another brand unless you like paying someone to install a new one every year.

We had a majic chef before just like this recent purchase. We bought another because it was in the middle of the holiday season and I didn't have time to re-do the mounting brackets. The first on only lasted a couple of years before it died. I got the second one with a $70 discount. I just hope it lasts longer. Mike

Great Value Priced Microwave
4 Star Review   By MHBI on Home Depot - Dec 20, 2011

I've had it setup for a couple of weeks now and it's working great. My other over the range unit went out about a year ago and I hadn't replaced it because of cost. With this unit at $98.00, there was no excuse not to replace it. I haven't put this one through all the paces yet, but it seems to do everything I need it for and even faster than the counter top unit I had been using. The only downfall I've found is that the turntable is small in comparison to the size of the cook area and that of the previous unit I had. This should only be an issue when putting really large items in that may drag on the sides or spin off the turntable. Not that big an issue especially considering the price. I am very happy with my purchase.

Three out of five microwave ovens have failed.
1 Star Review   By Jeff on Home Depot - Dec 20, 2011

I have five rentals units with one of these microwaves in each unit. The first one failed after approx. 3 years and the second one just failed after two years. The units have power to them but will not operate. Magic Chef will not stand behind either unit and suggest I call a local service center. No doubt the service will cost as much or more than a new unit. I am sure it won't be too long until the other three fails so I am cutting my losses and purchasing microwaves from other sources as these microwaves are junk.

2 Star Review   By poke on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011

top mounting nuts not self alighining as in most microwaves. broke off both nuts from their plastic holders and had to dissamble the front vent, it was an easy way to access the nuts and hold them by hand to mount the unit. mounting bolts positioned farther forward than most units. holes were flush agenst face frame of the cabinet. cabinets were standard depth mass produced 12'' x30''. the microwave worked fine. I install about 24 microvave units a year, had to work at installing this one. extra installitaion time negated any money saved on up front price if paying for instillation,

You get what you pay for
4 Star Review   By j0kerb0y on Home Depot - Nov 29, 2011

Bought this for $99 in store, as ours had just hit its 20th year then died. The mounting templates are great for new construction, but as far as retrofitting, forget about it. You're better off just hanging the bracket, marking the holes, and drilling away. And forget about the template for the top holes. You've got to trim it to size first, then try to put it in your cabinet to figure out where the holes should go. Just be sure you include the width of your cabinetry, and cross your fingers. One side's mounting nut had a burr on it that prevented the screw from even catching. So a little disassembly later, I was good to go. The door seems a little flimsy, but as long as it opens and closes, who cares. The auto-fan that kicks on during every microwaving session is a little annoying in terms of volume, but no matter.

Buyer Beware
1 Star Review   By mec4 on Home Depot - Jun 7, 2011

I bought this Magic Chef microwave for my mother about 15 months ago. It was well cared for and seldom used. Yet in less than 1-1/2 years the unit died. I called Magic Chef. They essentially said tough luck - the one year warranty had expired! No wonder Magic Chef does not put their name on the unit (I only learned that the product was Magic Chef by typing the model number into Google). Avoid this unit at all costs. Many of us have had the same, miserable, experience.

As Expected
4 Star Review   By MCav0706 on Home Depot - Apr 5, 2011

I had purchased this product in July of 2009. As to be expected, the fan has quit entirely and it only heats if it is cool or hasnt been used recently; it is now April 2011. My husband is furious, but I expect that from a cheaper unit. I am a conscious consumer, and generally read the reviews prior to making purchases. But this product, was too new when purchased. I was more than happy with the product!! It heated evenly, for a one-time heating...instead of the heat-stir-heat-stir like many microwaves. I loved the fact that I could change the setting so we didn't have to hear the beeping to let us know it was done or when you pressed a button!!! We have a smaller house and I wasn't afraid to use it when the kids were in bed. I guess all I have to say to those who want to give poor ratings to a product that even the manufacturer will only warranty for a year, you get what you pay for.

Too Difficult
2 Star Review   By RRRusty on Home Depot - Apr 4, 2011

I purchased the microwave about two years ago and it worked great. Then just a recently it unexpectantly died out. Considering this was an inexpensive over the counter job, I probably got as much as could be expected. It's good point is that it is a roomy microwave that works just as well as any other microwave. It has two bad points; It is difficult to program. You need the instructions to do so, as it is not intuitive. Then there is the short life span. Overall review is spend more and get a product you will be satisfied with.

Works great for the first year at least
5 Star Review   By OpenMedia on Home Depot - Jan 9, 2011

Several of the reviews warn that this thing doesn't last long, so I figured I'd wait a bit before submitting a review. I bought it over a year ago and was disappointed to see the first model did not work, right out of the box. It was replaced for free and the second one has not shown any problems for over a year. As some other reviewers mention, I was surprised to see the fan turn on automatically at times, initially assuming that was a defect, but I eventually realized it just does that if it gets too hot from the burners beneath, which is actually an impressive feature in that it turns itself on and off to prevent any overheating. Perhaps this microwave is a bit of a gamble in that you might get a lemon, and replacing these things is no fun, but mine has been great for over a year and I'm very happy with the purchase.

4 Star Review   By fur177 on Home Depot - Dec 28, 2010

Just purchased and installed the MCO165 UW. All went well until the actual install. The mounting holes did not line up correctly. After several attempts, we were able to mount the microwave. It looks great, works great . I read the review about a noisy fan and doubled checked the volumn on mine. It is an acceptable level. I wonder if the other fellow checked to make sure the fan was turned properly in his unit. At any rate, I am satisfied with the appearance and performance. Let you know if my opinion alters after regular use.

Over teh range microwave
4 Star Review   By Gclemons on Home Depot - Dec 13, 2010

So far this microwave has worked perfectly. For the price it has been an excellent purchase for us. It would be nice if the manufactures would all use a common mounting system so replacement wouldn't require more holes in the wall and cabinets but other than the hassle of trying to tape a paper template up installation was pretty straight forward. We have only had the microwave up for about 2 weeks but so far we haven;t had any problems. Seems to be a good product.

Great With An Exception
5 Star Review   By WaynePH on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2010

I purchased 3 of these units for some rental properties; they all had the same kitchen cabinets and an over the range fan. After removing the first fan I placed the templates as instructed and drilled my holes; although I was not on a stud the toggle bolts provided should have and would have if I hadn't been on an outside wall in Florida. Hello cinder blocks, a few tapcons later the frame was up and on the wall; so far so good. Next was time to lift and install; you simply tilt the unit and hook the slots on the pins on the mount, although they say this requires two people, I had no problem lifting and feeding the power cord through the hole I had drilled in the top cabinet. I did however have a problem with the bolts that come down through the top to secure the Microwave; they were set back about 1 1/2 inches to far. So now I have no template up and have pre drilled the hole and I'm standing there with the microwave in my hand, proud of myself that I had hooked the unit on the first try but can't secure it with the top screws. You guessed it down it comes and I estimate where to re drill holes with a quick measure; still scratching my head wondering how I missed where to drill, put it back up secured it from the top and it came up true to level and looked great. On to the next one, I said I'll have to be real careful; double checked my measurements and the directions nope had this one right, wrong here I am holding the second one with the screw hole an inch and a half back; so I took it down measure by hand re drilled the holes and up it went. On to number three, surely I must have made the same mistake twice, nope the third one was the same and trust me I triple checked, however before drilling I measured it out and the holes would have been short again, so I moved them forward and put it up first time. Al three went up perfectly level and only because of the outside walls on two of them did it take me about two hours each, if the top template had been right it would have save me about 20 minutes on each of the first two. In conclusion these are easy to install if you have the right hole saws and use the template, remember to measure the top holes before you drill. Once these are up they look great and work perfectly, this is a lot of Microwave for the money.

Lousy
1 Star Review   By tinabina on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2010

This microwave might be a good price, but it is not worth the time of installation or the money you spend on it. For a kitchen that is 8x10, I cannot even have a conversation with anyone outside of it the fan is so noisy and like another review stated, the fan comes on if there is heat or steam hitting the sensors. We have used it for two months and have just ordered a Maytag to replace it.

There's a reason why this is the least expensive
1 Star Review   By bettykb on Home Depot - Nov 12, 2010

I was looking to do a lost cost kitchen update. I don't use the microwave too often, mostly just to heat up the occasional frozen entree or zap a potato, so went with the least expensive microwave model. About a day after the 1 year warranty was up, the unit just stopped working. No heat at all, it just blows air around and spins the turntable. Basically a $160 digital clock at this point. Don't waste your money on this one, pony up a few more bucks and buy something more reliable.

1 Star Review   By davee42 on Home Depot - Oct 20, 2010

I purchased and installed this oven about 18 months ago. It has received little use (older couple, away lots of the time). It quit working shortly after its first anniversary. While it was still working, it was very noisy (both the microwave and the over-the-range fan were extremely noisy. My recommendation: spend a bit more money and get a better quality unit. Or get the extended warranty.
