Easy to Install
4 Star Review   By jomad on Home Depot - Apr 24, 2013

Found it easy to replace existing standard thermostat with concise wiring instructions. Programming the seven day schedule was quick with the help of the copy feature. So far so good, time will tell on the battery life.

GREAT instructions for first timer, but poor design.
3 Star Review   By BoxCarRacer on Home Depot - Apr 2, 2013

So going into this for the first time never having changed a thermostat. I was a little intimidated by all the wires my system had due to the heat pump. The directions that were laid out were a breeze to follow and made the installation so simple, but here is were the problems lie. First, why in the world would you have the wires come over top of the system and not in the middle like most that I have done research on. Second, a simple little rectangle sticker isn't going to stay on for long to hide the wires. Yes I can paint them, but why would I want to? Lastly, quite a few people had issues with the touch screen and I have to agree. The screen is not very sensitive to the touch and makes it very difficult to navigate through the system. Though, I found that using a pen or stylist works just fine. Honestly though I cannot complain. I was at Home Depot one morning looking at all of the thermostats. A dude from the Plumbing Department came over and we talked for a bit and he noticed that this model was suppose to be discontinued and sold it to me for $10. So all in all I'm out ten bucks and not mad at all for getting another brand that I think will work better for my home.

It almost made it one year
1 Star Review   By Brad on Home Depot - Mar 21, 2013

The Filtrete 3M-30 has nice features but it keeps horrible time lost almost 10 minutes in 3 months and now with one year approaching it has stopped working correctly. I would choose a different brand. It does come with a five year warranty but them making good on it is another story plus its hard to heat your home with a broken thermostat.

don't bother with this
1 Star Review   By Timo on Home Depot - Mar 13, 2013

After owning this for two years, it started to fail. at first i thought it was a dying battery, although battery indicator did not come on, so i changed the battery, it made no difference. First signs of failure were sporadic touch screen sensitivity, sometimes it would work, sometimes not. Then the backlight failed to turn on when touched, when touch worked. Next phase of failure was it would reset on its own, dumping the programming i had entered, returning to factory settings about once a week. Now nothing works, and all it does is flash all the segments of the LCD sections (temp, day of week, time).

Uses MORE electricity than old thermostate
1 Star Review   By TimMcG on Home Depot - Mar 10, 2013

Overall, these units were a pain to install, missing mounting hardward to cover hole in the wall from old manual thermostat. Also very poor documentation, did not cover heat pumps - had to call for support to get that jumper setting. But main problem is that if it cools too much, it doesn't simply turn off, it tries to raise the temp, then it does that too much, then tries to cool again - so it is swinging back and forth - cool, hot, cool. They say it can't but I have two filtrete therms that DO! DO NOT BUY FILTRETE BRAND - a normal person will have installation problems, and it uses more energy than the dumb mechanical thermostats! Here is the transscript with their tech support: When I have it set on cool, how do I prevent it from turning on the heater to raise the tempurature in program mode Hi. This is Bobbi. When you have the unit set to cool, it should not be turning the heater on at all. but it is Is your heat gas or electric? electric heat pump setting jumpers 4,5,7 model is 3M-25 What wires do you have? r,g,y,w w is set to O r to RH on original manual thermistat is was set r to R, y to Y, g to G, w to W OK. Touch screen issues
2 Star Review   By RRiL on Home Depot - Jan 20, 2013

Installation was OK, and the 7 day programming feature is nice. Beyond that, this is not a very worth-while purchase. The touch screen is very difficult to use and often non-responsive. It can get very frustrating. I had a power outage about 2 months after installing this unit, and it quick working after that. I was actually happy to have an excuse to get something more user-friendly.

does not do what I wanted
2 Star Review   By Steve on Home Depot - Dec 27, 2012

I bought this thermostat to save money with my elec heat pump. After getting it installed, I found out that it is not possible to turn off the aux heat. So, when the heating system is told to bring the house temp back up, the aux heat comes on, negating any cost savings. The only way to turn it off is disconnect the wire.

Going to replace
2 Star Review   By amb7247 on Home Depot - Dec 18, 2012

After a bit of frustration of damaging the screen, oops, the screen was not very responsive. A big problem that made me mad was the fact that the system would complain of low battery and sometimes reset itself when I put two fresh AA's in it. Not good quality. Find something else.

Very good unit with nice features!!!
4 Star Review   By Matt on Home Depot - Nov 13, 2012

Pros: - Installs easily - Setup was easy - Nice features - Easy to operate - Big Screen Cons: - Sticks out from wall quite a bit - Hard plastic sticker they give you to cover the wires on top is pretty cheap looking All in all I really like this unit. I had it installed in less than 10 minutes and setup about 5-10 minutes after that. Being able to set each day different is nice, and you can set one day then copy it to the others if you like. The touch screen is nice, too. I would recommend using a stylus, though. Some of the push points seem to be pretty small. We really like the Holiday feature. This is an on/off feature you set to a certain temperature. I suspect most people would set this so that when they're home for a holiday it stays at a nice temperature. We set it so that if we're away for a while it won't heat up the house too much while we're gone. We figured if we're home we can regulate the temperature!!! The only thing I don't like is that it sticks out form the wall quite a bit. This seems to be the same unit as the one that uses the wireless module (I think you can get a wireless module add on for this), so it sticks out about a centimeter and there is a big opening on the side for the module. The wires get wired through the top, so they provide a hard plastic sticker to put over them to hide them. The sticker doesn't look all that bad, but it doesn't seem to stick down very well and I think this could've been designed better.

Unresponsive touch screen
1 Star Review   By Matt on Home Depot - Aug 14, 2012

Saves you money on your electricity
5 Star Review   By Chris on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2012

I've currently had this thermostat for a year now and its worked great for me. Its really accurate on the temperature and I like the energy save mode option to hit when I'm at work during the day. Since I've had this I've saved at least $50 a month on my electric bill.

This product initially works great. After about 6 months the touchscreen stopped working. It's really hard to program a touchscreen thermostat if the screen itself doesn't work.

Poor Quality
1 Star Review   By Matt on Home Depot - Apr 5, 2012

Purchased in late December 2011 to replace a non-programmable t-stat. At first, it functioned beautifully. On 3.31.2012, it failed. This was verified by our professional HVAC tech. It was returned/exchanged for a different, name brand, t-stat that our HVAC guy recommended. I cannot recommend this unit after our experience and the multiple low reviews on this site. If you choose a Filtrete model, I pray you have a better experience than we did.

Not worth it! Surprised it's made in China?
1 Star Review   By rooseveltsquare319c on Home Depot - Mar 18, 2012

Had it for a few days when it started failing and reverting back to factory defaults. I even programmed the "hard" override to bypass all of the "energy saving" options so that it basically functioned like an old fashioned device. Yes, like many products made in China, it is simply a clunky piece of plastic not designed to last for years and years to come - No, it's designed to fail so that you buy another one. Well, I'm just going to re-install the old one and return it in the morning.

Not what i expected
1 Star Review   By vvmtz on Home Depot - Mar 15, 2012

Im upgrading parts of my home and i have an old school thermostat. So i was thinking might as well update to a digital one, thinking it would be user friendly to program. WRONG!!!! Dont get me wrong the item is nice looking and very eay to install but once you try to set to the temp you want, it goes back to the "default" setting. i did everything the manuel said but the instructions are not user friendly at all. I call Tech suspport 3 times, on hold for over 10 mins and voicemail come up. I have not yet recieved a call back for this company. im returning this item as soon i buy i a better one. if any of you are looking into buying a thermostat, please go to company website first and read maunel and if any questions call the company before you start spending money.

quite happy w/ this tstat. easy to install & just as easy to program. my only trivial complaint would be the aesthetics...there are large slots @ either end of the stat that re quite noticeable from the sides. other than that works great & does its job.

Works but has a quirk
1 Star Review   By Orngfan on Home Depot - Dec 5, 2011

Bought this model to replace 2 other touchscreens that stopped working. The touchscreen works well and the backlight is a great feature. Programming is not too difficult and there are enough time zones. The bad/quirk is that I am having a problem where every day at 6:00 pm when in heating mode the thermostat will reset back to a lower temperature. I program the temp low and over ride to a higher temperature when I am home. When I am home I will over ride and set to 70 degrees. At 6:00 pm for no apparent reason the thermostat switches to 62 degrees. My time zones are no where near 6:00 pm. This is a real disappointment since in my 9 years of home ownership I am on my 3rd touchscreen from HD for various failures/problems. While this one still "works" it does not work as intended.

Failed within 1 month of operation
1 Star Review   By VJ99 on Home Depot - Nov 29, 2011

Bought this at HD and connected it within an hour. Programming it is not as easy as the Honeywell models, because it does not allow you to select multiple days when setting up the schedule. Worst part is that it failed within a month of operation. Looking for the receipt to return this piece of junk :-(

Great concept, poor quality
1 Star Review   By czissman on Home Depot - Nov 28, 2011

Although I had high hopes for this thermostat and installation was a snap, my regard for it immediately dropped several notches when I started using the touch screen to configure it. Unlike a touch screen smart phone whereon you can generally touch the screen in the vicinity of the desired function and it will know what you want to do, you have to play around with this device quite a bit to learn precisely where and how firmly to touch the manipulate each function. This wasn't pleasant but it was forgivable, considering how rarely you need to interact with basic programming once a thermostat is configured. The point at which I decided it must go back is when I realized the unit would simply not hold programming, even during the programming process. I repeatedly--and very carefully--configured each day to my liking and then went through the program to make sure I got it right. Invariably, one or two of the seven days (always Friday &/or Saturday) would not how their program. I'd go through again and again the programming would be lost. I will take this back and upgrade to the WiFi version and see how that goes.

Great Thermostat for the Money
5 Star Review   By BostonEnergySaver on Home Depot - Nov 22, 2011

Waste of money
1 Star Review   By KMurph on Home Depot - Nov 1, 2011

We bought 2, one for each floor, and had to replace both of them right out of the box because of a manufacturer defect. We've had the replacement thermostats in for about 2 months and the one upstairs quit working once we switched it over to heat. Customer service for Filtrete wasn't much help, in fact they were quite rude. Now I have to replace another one. Needless to say, I won't be purchasing another Filtrete product.

1 Star Review   By RickF on Home Depot - Oct 26, 2011

I installed and programmed this unit as specified in the installation manual. The installation and programming went well and my Heat Pump worked well for 2 days then the screen just went blank and the thermostat quit working. I pressed the reset button and changed batteries and still No Joy! I will be returning this to HD.

Broke after 3 months
1 Star Review   By Chris on Home Depot - Sep 29, 2011

I bought this thermostat because it was capable of running off the 24 volts from the furnace transformer so I wouldn't have to change batteries all the time. After 3 months it no longer operates off the 24 volts and will only operate off batteries. I contacted 3M Filtrete customer service and they would do nothing for me.

Easy install with tech support
4 Star Review   By GBarker on Home Depot - Aug 20, 2011

I bought this to replace what I think is a defective original thermostat. It can be very confusing installing these but with the tech support it was a breeze. I like the back-lit display that turns on when you press a button. My old unit didn't have that feature. It would be very difficult to see at night. The newly modeled unit looks much better than the image on the site. All of the programming buttons are hidden. It also covered my old unit's footprint nicely.

5 Star Review   By snuggle on Home Depot - Aug 19, 2011

I bought this because it had a lock out function. My son likes to adjust settings when I am not home. This put an end to it. It was easy to install. I was able to do it myself. Put the stickers that came with the unit on the wires from my old unit and then put the wires in the proper place on the new. That simple. You can program temps for morn, day, eve & night and by each day.

Easy Install & Setup
5 Star Review   By Casey on Home Depot - Jul 16, 2011

I purchased this product from Home Depot yesterday, and had it setup in my house in less that 30 minutes. A very nice feature on it is the ability to calibrate the temperature on the unit. It adds some nice flexibility that most unit at this price point do not give you. It was very easy to program for the 7 days. The only drawback was the time setup feature not allowing you to update the hour and then the minutes, so it takes a little time walking through to set the time if you do it at 8:30 PM like I did. A very minor drawback as it starting working right away, and I'm very pleased with this! I cannot stress how easy it was to install.

2nd one
5 Star Review   By hickmangirl on Home Depot - May 14, 2011

The only reason I have bought a second one is that I moved and left the first at the other house. Pretty simple installation and never had any problems with battery life or programming. I know it helped to save a lot of money on my energy bills, especially since I work odd hours and would have the thermostat programmed to meet my needs for when I would be at home. One thing I really like is that the backlight only comes on when you're fiddling with the thermostat and goes off pretty quickly instead of just being on. Honestly, I had the first one for 2 years and other than programming it I never had to mess with it. So, if you know what your heating and cooling needs are you can just set the programs and forget about it!

Just to clarify to PCGirl81
4 Star Review   Home Depot

Hello, I am too busy to write an in depth review. I wanted to comment on PCGirl81's review about always having to tap the time. If you hold your finger on the time for a few seconds, it will begin jumping to 30 minute increments.

Great thermostat
4 Star Review   By PCGirl81 on Home Depot - Jan 31, 2011

I bought this as an upgrade from a 5-2 day programmable thermostat. It was very easy to install and program, but I did have a few small issues with it. First, items such as the day of week and time are located on the top left corner of the touchscreen, and if you have either large fingers or nails, it was very difficult to change one without accidentally changing the other. The instruction manual recommends using a stylus, but one is not included. Second, specifically with the time, there was no easy way to change it without tapping the screen repeatedly. For example, I was installing the thermostat at 3PM, but the default time was set for 12AM. So I had to constantly and manually tap my way through until it got to now 3:10PM. It's not a deal breaker, but I wish there were an easier way to program the time. And third, speaking of having to repeatedly tap, I wish the thermostat allowed you to make changes without constantly having to do that. Another example, you have to press and hold the screen where the current temperature is displayed to bring up the target temperature. So it gives you an up and down arrow, but you have to keep tapping it to get to your desired temp rather than hold either the up or down arrow. Again, not a deal breaker, but definitely leaves some room for improvement. Otherwise, it was a great deal for the price and would highly recommend!

Good Product; tough installation
4 Star Review   By RickJr on Home Depot - Dec 17, 2010

I have installed 3 of these units in my home. They work as intended and actually quite well. The only issue I had was that it was difficult for the HVAC professional to install the units. 3M says that the homeowners can install these units; however, I would not suggest a homeowner do so. It is simply not that easy to install the units. In addition, you need to be careful when buying these units. At some point, 3M made some upgrades to the 3M-30; however, 3M didn't change the model number. For example, one of the upgrades made by 3M was to add a "Holiday" function and also a button to activiate "EMER" heat (for heat pump systems). Neither of those functions came on my unit. When I called 3M's customer service (which was very good, by the way), the representative advised me that I had purchased one of the "older" units. Overall, a good product, but a couple of issues are present.

I Like It!
4 Star Review   By Jameson on Home Depot - Nov 1, 2010

I replaced my thermostat in my apartment with this one to save energy! It was really easy and straight forward to install. But, it did take a few collaborations to get the temperature readings to read the correct temperature. All in all, very good product. I like the light blue backlight rather than a super bright green. It's cheap for a 7-day programmer, it has a hold button, and it runs off battery OR HVAC, whichever you prefer. I like that a lot and I think it's worth the money.

Better than the Honeywell
5 Star Review   By birtchetg on Home Depot - Sep 19, 2010

I just picked up 2 of these and installed them in my house. They were quite a bit cheaper than the Honeywell brand and I decided to gamble. The house we just moved from had the comparable Honeywell brand thermostats in it and we liked them as well. The 3M Filtrete was just as easy to install, and the user interface was as user friendly and easy to learn as the Honeywell. Great instructions were included as well. Since the Filtrete gives a comparable performance as the Honeywell for a better price I think this is the way to go.
