Cools fine, but noisy
2 Star Review   By PHILA on Home Depot - Aug 22, 2011

This unit was purchased to replace an old bedroom unit (used in an approximately 250 square foot room), and has been in use for a few weeks now. The unit cools the space adequately and fairly quickly, but is noisy enough that it has woken us up. The unit will be intermittently rattly or the overall noise will be uneven (not just the uniform "hum" you would expect). We may end up switching this unit to another room and buying a new model for the bedroom. Overall, a disappointing purchase.

auto/energy saver feature does not work
2 Star Review   By db22 on Home Depot - Aug 16, 2011

When I set the GE AEL06LP 6,300 BTU air conditioner to auto/energy saver with a fixed temperature, it works fine until the temperature is reached. Once it reaches the desired temperature, it turns off. The unit will stay off despite the fact that the room temperature goes 8 to 10 degrees higher. This is because the gauge still reads the set temperature level. If I manually turn the unit on, or lower the set temperature to turn the unit on, within seconds of running air through the system, it shows the much higher real temperature. It is unclear if the unit's thermostat is getting conflicting readings from the outside temp, inside temperature or reading the coil temp. Regardless of the cause, something needs to be done to correct this unit’s poor ability to read the room temperature so that the unit can properly maintains the desired level. Until GE corrects this well known problem, the auto energy saver feature on this model is useless.

Thermostat seems wrong
3 Star Review   By jose on Home Depot - Aug 9, 2011

It shows very low temperature even when it is really hot. Also because of that it doesn't turn itself on when it's needed. Worst, I bought it online and received it three days after the day it was supposed to arrive!

Well....
1 Star Review   By RockMusicMan on Home Depot - Aug 8, 2011

This is my evaluation of this GE 6300 BTU unit. Postives: 1. Blows cold air 2. Not too noisy, normal for an a/c. 3. Looks nice. 4. Has a remote control. Negatives: 1. The "energy saver" mode does not work. In this mode the unit cannot determine what the room temperature is because it shuts off the fan when the set temp equals the room temp. It does not turn on, if it ever does, for a very long time. The manual says this mode is for the room when unoccupied, but since it does not work correctly, this won't work in that case either. The unit needs to turn on the fan every several minutes to measure the room temp, which it doesn't, to know what the room temp is in order to "know" if the compressor and fan should be turned on. 2. Display shows inaccurate room temperature in the energy saver mode since the fan is not running. It shows a colder temperature than the room temp, since the sensor inside is next to the cool air coils. 3. The mounting bar under the unit is too wide for window frames that are 1 inch or less. It should fit inside a 1 inch deep (front to back) frame, but since the bar is over 1 inch, it does not fit inside, but must balance on the frame. This is unstable. 4. Too much light shines through the air outlet from the outside. This is because the material inside is white and translucent (like styrofoam). If anything does not work right or it does not install well, then it gets a low rating. Why should I own an a/c that has a mode that does not work? I want to save energy and not listen to a fan when the unit is not running while I am asleep, and still have an a/c that saves energy when the room is occupied.

Welcome cool air
5 Star Review   By frissy on Home Depot - Aug 6, 2011

This air conditioner is a great value for all the features and performance. Quiet as any unit could be, remote and temperature controlled, and the price minus the rebate from the electric company is a most welcome bonus. The entire experience with no charge for delivery, and the courtesy of all employees was much appreciated.

Flawless!
5 Star Review   By cupcake on Home Depot - Aug 6, 2011

I was impressed. I bought this when recently there was a heat wave and you could not find an air conditioner in ANY store. Home Depot online had any size you could want. They delivered it to my home in three days, just as promised. Charged me nothing to do it. They ARE THE BEST. Now about the air conditioner. It runs great and is very easy to operate. Also looks nice in the window (white). I was very happy with the price and what I received.

G.E. 6300 BTU Air Conditioner
5 Star Review   By PeggieQ on Home Depot - Aug 6, 2011

My a/c was delivered to my door. No trying to get it in the car or carry indoors. It took me 5 minutes to connect the fan sides to the a/c and I easily popped it into the window. It weighed half as much as my old a/c, so installing it was simple. I received it during a major heat wave of 90-100 degrees. Within minutes, I felt the coolness. I have called everyone I know, to get rid of the painfully heavy a/cs they have and buy this one. Much lighter and works better and faster.

GE 6300, Not for Shift Workers.
4 Star Review   By LiteUrEyes on Home Depot - Jul 30, 2011

I read most of these reviews before sending my husband to get this a/c. The one and only thing I didn't read is the one thing that makes a difference to us. "WARNING" If you work shift work and need your bedroom dark. DON'T purchase this a/c. Everything else works great. It's even quiet, don't pay attention to those that say it's not. There is a horrible light source that comes from the frame outside and shines through to the white styrofoam, which reflects into the room like it is day time... The Photo is of my room in the daytime, this is the light source from the a/c.

Highly Recommend
5 Star Review   By boston11 on Home Depot - Jul 26, 2011

I thought that this product would be loud, given some of the other reviews, but it isn't much louder than the average fan. It surprises me sometimes when the compressor kicks on, but otherwise it's much quieter than I expected. I sleep easily through the night with this a/c in my bedroom, and it keeps my 150 sq. ft. room icy cold even when it's over 100 degrees and super humid outside (ah, New England summers!) I definitely recommend.

Quiet, works well
4 Star Review   By 1221cape on Home Depot - Jul 25, 2011

This air conditioner works pretty well with the exception of the thermostat. I don't think that the thermostat readout is correct. I can work around it by readjusting the temperature setting. Don't know if it is worth the hassle of returning it. Otherwise, it does a good job and is quieter than I expected.

Fantastice AC for a small house
5 Star Review   By Manda on Home Depot - Jul 23, 2011

I have a very Small house, just over 450sq feet, and this is the only ac i need to keep it very cool and comfortable. i like that it only allows the air temp to get a couple degrees over the set temp before it turns on and when it is just below the set temp it turns everything off. it is much more efficient than the portable ac i was using and it is energy star rated. I am very happy with this AC and i have already recommended it to my friends.

Great little AC
4 Star Review   By TamTam on Home Depot - Jul 23, 2011

This AC is excellent-- My room is small but has very high ceilings, and still this little thing chugs along and cools everything down reasonably fast. It's pretty quiet, too, though I always like some white noise when sleeping. It doesn't vibrate much. It has a low profile and is as 'nice looking' as an AC could ever be. The remote control works very well. The only thing is that sometimes the room temperature monitor seems a little wrong, sometimes the compressor won't turn on if the set temp is only one or two degrees higher than the room temp, so I have to fiddle around to make it turn on. But that's minor since it does, in the end, work.

powerful, efficient, but really noisy
2 Star Review   By wemu on Home Depot - Jul 23, 2011

Typical American product. Cools down my bedroom (size of ~4 queen-size bed) from 85F to 72F within 15 minutes. However, never consider using it for sleep! This machines demonstrates its power by loud noise as well. The compressor works like a diesel engine even at "low fan speed" + "energy saving" mode. Anyway, considering the price, it is still OK, especially when you just want to use it for one summer.

cools room well enough but the noise level is enough to drive you out of the room energy saver setting reacts very slowly to changes in room temperature and sometime not at all I have another brand that is much quieter and performs on energy saving setting much better.

Better Than Expected-great value
5 Star Review   By Dirtbikeer on Home Depot - Jul 17, 2011

I research products extensively before purchasing anything and I must say this purchase was a great buy. This a/c unit preforms outstanding, it is everything everyone said in reviews; quiet inside and outside, great features and cools our entire upstairs which, was very hot even with our central air running. To my suprise it came with everything, the sliders, good instruction, long cord (with GFI) and foam insulation which was great, (no bugs get in). I placed in a small replacement window that was only 21-1/2" by cutting a 1/2" off off the top and bottom plastic slider angle pieces (4 cuts) of the accordian assy which, allowed me to squish the accordian smaller. The cabinet is 18.5" but the accordian assy makes it 22-1/2 but do what I did and you can use the accordian in a smaller window, just as it was meant to be used. Great Deal, bought it at the store for same price. Don't forget to get you'r $35.00 rebate for buying energy star. makes this a heck of a buy! Mike

Great little a/c
5 Star Review   By MrTex on Home Depot - Jul 15, 2011

I was looking for a window a/c to put in my bedroom to give my central unit a break while at home and at night, since my central unit cools the whole house, and I don't need the whole house cooled while I am sleeping, since it just just my wife and I at home. I bought this unit after reading many reviews, and decided to get it delivered via free home delivery. Installation was easy, and so is operation. It cools my room effectively, and the humming puts us to sleep. My only complaint is the LED light on the display can be bright if you like your room completely dark. I usually put a rag over the display when I'm ready to sleep. Overall, great little unit!

Great air conditioner for price!
5 Star Review   By MJ2011 on Home Depot - Jul 13, 2011

I purchased this unit for my parents to supplement their central air conditioner. The unit has a nice clean look and is easy to install. The control panel is easy to use and the remote control feature is wonderful. It has 3 speeds and is quiet on all 3 but yet very powerful. The digital temperature and auto setting works great and shuts the unit off when the desired temperature is reached. I installed this in a 2nd floor window and it really helps cool the entire 2nd floor of their home. It was a great value for the price. I would highly recommend this air conditioner.

For the cautious buyers...
5 Star Review   By Allie on Home Depot - Jul 12, 2011

This unit is terrific! I am a 20 year old female living in a studio apt., and I just brought this home today. It does a great job cooling my room, and was very easy to install (I've never installed an AC before). Also, it was really important to me to find a unit that wasn't very noisy, and I was wary of reading reviews that commented on sound because they seemed very inconsistent. So, from someone that is very sensitive to sound, I have to say that this unit is pretty close to perfect. The unit makes a low humming sound that is no louder than a fan or a humidifier (in fact, it's quieter than both!) The sound is consistent, no weird sudden noises- chirps, burps, shifts, etc. I actually like the white noise it produces because it cancels out the noises outside my window... great if you have loud neighbors, which I do. I would recommend this product to anyone with a small studio apartment like my own. I am very happy with this unit.

failure out of box
1 Star Review   By chris on Home Depot - Jul 7, 2011

I purchased this unit to replace the portable unit in my baby's room. install of this unit is easy, light weight but unit failed to cool. The unit uses Styrofoam for the air ducting and cowling inside outside frame is decent for strength though. Very simple and cheap looking. The instructions are for sash style (opens up and down, I have a side sliding window so I had to use hooks and chain above the window. Upgraded to the 8000 btu and cools a 14x14 no problem.

Cold Air for a Very Good Price!
5 Star Review   By TheGreg on Home Depot - Jul 3, 2011

A bit of thought went into this purchase. I've created a "man cave" with lots of electronic toys, i.e. Heat Sources. The room is only 143 sq. ft. The 6300 btu size can keep it at 72. Outside is 101. I bought two, I for a spare bedroom. This gives my central unit a break. I have old style slider windows and wanted to keep them usable, so the units where installed in the wall. They are louder then a split unit, not noticeable with a movie on. They run quiet outside too, so won't bother the neighbors.

5 Star Review   By oliverocks on Home Depot - Jun 27, 2011

This is a very nice unit! Such a great price. Every little bit on this unit seems well thought-out and of great quality. Fits in my window perfectly and looks quite nice. The remote control is an nice extra. I am really pleased with this purchase. Quiet and seems to have good cooling power. My living room is about 300 sq. ft and I think this will work very well. It is energy efficient too. Home Depot offered free delivery. Good set up kit and instructions.

Fast cooling, energy saver, automatic function and great function

The only drawback is that when setting on automatic mode, this A/C tends to make fast cooling instead of quiet cooling; you have to shift the fan to low to make it quieter

Cools really well!
4 Star Review   By Kartor on Home Depot - Jun 13, 2011

I just purchased this item yesterday and it has exceeded my expectations. I have a flat screen in my room that radiates so much heat, I had to get one of these. My room is about 10x11 and this unit cooled my room down in a few minutes. It blows out super cold air. The remote is great for when I'm too lazy to get up. The only thing I don't like about this unit is that if I put it on auto/72 degrees/energy saver, once it reaches 72 degrees it turns off, and it keeps saying the temperature is at 72 degrees 20 minutes later when it's actually hotter. I have to lower the set temperature for it to turn back on, and when it does turn back on, the temperature indicator will say something higher...it's confusing. So I just keep it on low/72 degrees/energy saver and that works fine.

GE 6300BTU air conditioner
5 Star Review   By shmooglass on Home Depot - Jun 13, 2011

The air conditioner is well built but light enough for one person to place in a window. It cools the room (12X15) better than our previous 7000btu unit which was only 5yrs old.The noise is not a problem, all a/c make noise. The fact that it displays the room temp is a plus. Compared to similar brands this seems like the best choice for an a/c in this size and price range.

Just like I wanted it
5 Star Review   By Galula on Home Depot - Jun 12, 2011

I bought this window ac to supplement the central unit which stopped cooling once Texas heat hit 95 degrees. It is doing a great job keeping the temp tolerable in all parts of the house. It is quiet and starts and stops without startling you. My only concern is safety. The window is literally unsecured.

A fantastic product
5 Star Review   By SeanM74 on Home Depot - Jun 11, 2011

It cools down very well and is more than enough for a medium-sized room. I would certainly recommend it to anybody that wants to buy an AC on a budget for their bedroom or home office. I should also add that the delivery was fast and professional as well. It can get somewhat noisy but not too much to get annoying, plus, I was expecting a little noise from a window AC anyway. Very satisfied over all indeed.

This air conditioner is great. I am very pleased with my purchase. Cools the room fast and is quiet. A nice low hum. You can watch tv and not have to adjust the volume.

Worth the Money!
5 Star Review   By Jgmbrown on Home Depot - Jun 11, 2011

This window unit cools as well as i'd hoped it would.I've had it about 3 weeks now, installed in the MB & it really keeps the bedroom & bathroom cool and comfortable.I've only used the low cool setting when home & energy saving automatic setting when not at home, and even with the heat wave close to 100 degrees my central unit doesn't have to work so hard. My electric bill came and was only a few dollars higher than last mo.without the window unit! I'm lovin' it!!!!

Love it!!
5 Star Review   By Speck174 on Home Depot - May 29, 2011

The only complaint would be it's a bit loud for air conditioners but it doesn't bother us because we sleep better with the humming of a space heater or air conditioner so we love it!!! Great features and great price!!

GE 6300 BTU Window Unit Air Conditioner
5 Star Review   By kewlbreeze on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2011

This is the best unit in its class currently offered through the Home Depot. Easy installation and reliable operation. It has a good Energy Star rating as well, which is something many units in this class either spec out much lower on or don't come with at all. This is important to have as it will mean a lower yearly operating cost than other similar units. I currently use this unit in my home computer lab / music studio which is located in central Arkansas. This is the only cooling source for this area which is 15' x 12' x 8' and I am able to easily maintain a temperature of 68deg. This seems to be an excellent unit and I don't regret the purchase one bit.

Notes on Drainage
5 Star Review   By sandiegobrass on Home Depot - Apr 27, 2011

Another reviewer commented on drainage issues. The unit (like most others) is designed to collect the condensate and make the fan splash it on the coils to improve cooling and overall efficiency. Drilling a drain hole defeats this energy conservation feature.

Great little a/c unit
5 Star Review   By averageman on Home Depot - Mar 31, 2011

I bought this unit last year at the start of spring. The unit worked great and used according to my figuring aka checking electric meter seeing actual khr's used it used about 3 maybe 4 a day(hot texas weather). This is a very efficient unit unit using only about 5 to 6 amps draw on high cool. Cons: Only thing i did not like about it is the drainage of it of which it has poor drainage if any. In fact it filled with water and became a burden on the outside fan. So if you buy this unit you will want to "safely" drill a hole or 2 for drainage.
